Close to school, close to friends

Nielsen is a great location and is a nice place overall. Our unit is two floors and includes a washer, dryer, and one car garage. We have an additional parking pass for another car. The kitchen has plenty of counter space and our landlord is very responsive to requests for repairs. While the space is pretty open and the rooms are a decent size, there isn’t much sunlight unless you get a unit on the very end of the building. Also, while the bedroom in the basement includes a bathroom, there is no closet. The area is overall quiet and clean. We’re about a 10 minute walk from our doorstep to the lecture hall in the medical school and a 5 minute walk away from the majority of our classmates.

Great location and property

It's basically great. We've had a few minor issues with appliances but that's not a given for the properties in the complex, and depends on current/past ownership.

Good Spot

This is a good place to live. Across the street from the hospital and med school- I walk almost always. It can get loud when med students have parties. It is not the place to live if you don't want to see classmates when you take out your trash- you will see everyone, all the time. If you want that, then this is the place for you!

Condo right next to medical campus

Very convenient location, condos are very spacious, and condo association is good at keeping up on maintenance, landscaping, and snow removal. Downsides are that the units may have multiple flights of stairs, are not well-insulated, and visitor parking in the area can be challenging. The management company LandArc is also a pain to deal with, especially when it comes to maintenance issues.

Nice place, great location, but a multitude of landlords

It's pretty nice, for an apartment. The location is hard to beat, right across the street from the hospital. There is no single landlord, so things can be hit or miss; you might get a nice one who knows what they are doing, or you might get a newbie who is too busy and/or doesn't seem to care much if defects in the unit lead to a disruption in your medical education.

Experience Varies with Landlord

I've had a great experience with my condo unit as we have a fairly responsive landlord who rents out the unit at a steal of a price. I like that the Nielsen condos are a 10-minute walk to the hospital and, in the summer, a 20-30 minute walk downtown. My unit is one of the larger units, so we have plenty of room to live and entertain. I lived in Kerrytown in M1 year which was great for the close location to downtown, however we paid more for a much older, smaller home with inefficient heating and no AC. We were happy when we were able to lock down a unit at Nielsen.

The one downside of living here is that parking can be difficult. Every unit gets one guest parking spot for the outside lot, however there aren't enough spaces for every unit (Almost everyone here uses their guest parking spot for stable parking f a second or third vehicle rather than for guests). If you're working late and rely on the lot parking, you may find there are no spaces left and need to park on the street and hope to find a spot in the morning. This is also made more difficult in the winter as the homeowners association hasn't had the lines re-paved in a long time, so entire spots get lost by bad/crooked parking in snowy conditions.

Overall, I love living in Nielsen but I can see how others who have difficult landlords or want to live closer to downtown can find its location isolating.

Pricey

My apartment is too expensive. I pay $1200/mo and this is a large amount given that I have two roommates. Issues with water pressure, heat.

Good condo, excellent location, terrible landlord

For the location and size, the rent is very reasonable. I just happen to have a landlord who is very difficult to reason with. Student legal services has been very helpful.
