good value for money

Pros:
1. New building and quiet neighborhood (though trains are passing by at mid-night around 2:00 am, it doesn't bother me)
2. 3-minute walk to Durham station, there are buses to school and the airport
3. 15 minutes walk to downtown

Cons:
1. Not so many MBA students live here
2. Not a big neighborhood, facilities such as the gym room and swimming pool are small

Good Apartment

It is a good apartment overall. Crime is low. I have heard of a garage break-in, but never witnessed one or damage. The apartments are nice. The coffee machine is great. Management is responsive. The gym is terrible, but equivalent to any apartment gym. The pool and outside areas are very nice. Overall, it is a great value for the price and I plan on staying there for as long as I am in Durham.

Whetstone apartments

Great apartment downtown! one con is the pool is in the center of the complex and can occasionally get noisy. another is that my packages keep getting stolen, despite having a mail room lol. otherwise managment is great, maintenance is awesome, the complex is clean and nice, and the price is great for a downtown apartment.

Great Management

One of the best apartment complexes I've moved into, if not just for the spacious floor plans, parking, and proximity to downtown Durham and ATC, but for the amazing management who are extremely personable and set up monthly events for residents!

Great apartment in a great location

I love living at the Whetstone apartments. I live in a Corner unit and we get plenty of sunlight. Management is responsive and has lots of events for residents. Great amenities and location to downtown Durham. Only cons are that sometimes there is a weird smell in the halls, and it can be a bit noisy. Recycling is also a challenge.

Whetstone - Student Perspective

The apartment is well maintained, has covered parking, and is located right downtown. Being downtown, its nosier than other places. I wish the windows were not so thin because you hear buses and trains often. The space is on the smaller side but has a nice layout and spacious bathrooms and bedrooms. Management is nice and there are a lot of young people who live in the building.

Perfect place to live, just a little far of the university

no complaints at all, the place is nice, safe, clean, excellent administration but if you don't have a car, the university can be far from you.

Hidden Gem

I’ve loved living at the Whetstone. The management is nice and responsive, rent is very reasonable for a managed property in the area and it’s in a great location. Easy walk to the center of Durham (and Shooters) and a great option for Duke grad students with a car. The apartment complex has a small gym/pool and a mini convenience store in the building.

Best spot for value in American Tobacco Campus

The location, situated just next to the American Tobacco Campus and event centers such as DPAC (and tons of restaurants/coffee shops in walking distance) is absolutely perfect, and the price is far lower than other surrounding complexes. The leasing team are wonderful and frequently host resident events with free food and drinks as well as contests and giveaways. Parking is free and gated, and there is free guest parking as well (a commodity). The bedrooms and living areas are a bit smaller than I would like, though.

Downtown Durham Reviews

I have always felt safe in the area and love that so many restaurants are walkable. Prior to COVID-19, it was also a huge benefit to walk to DPAC for off-broadway shows or to the Durham Bulls stadium for a game.
Downtown is the best place to live in Durham! I love walking to bars, restaurants, shops, and the Farmer's Market. It is super easy to drive to campus as well.
Great experience. Some of the best bars ans restaurants are in Downtown, as well as the DPAC, Bulls stadium and other things to do. It's close to the American Tobacco Campus and Trail. One of the "busiest" places in Durham.
Very fun area, nice to have a lot of bars/restaurants in walking distance. Drive to school is quick and easy.
Van Alen is in a great spot in Durham. Several large new apartment complexes are being built around it. It is also right next to the Durham Courthouse which has a 24/7 police presence and patrol cars are constantly pulling in and out of the courthouse garage at all hours.

With that being said, Van Alen is still in Durham.
It takes on average less than 10 minutes for me to go from Van Alen to the science drive parking garage at Duke.
It's been cool but not too much to do because of covid. Weekends can get loud outside because of the close proximity to bars and restaurants. If everything was open it would be sweet.
Up and coming but a good choice of restaurants about about 0.5miles away
We have enjoyed living downtown well enough, but we have not been able to take advantage of much of it due to COVID.
