Sawtelle

Close to UCLA and the Beach
Sawtelle is a popular option for UCLA students looking for proximity to campus and a short trip to the beach. While there are many great restaurants and shops in the area, some of them cater to a slightly older clientele and can be a bit pricey. The neighborhood is repeatedly highlighted for its safety and walkability, making it easy to hit up one of the highly rated Sushi spots, enjoy the nightlife at places like Mom’s Bar or The Arsenal, or take a casual stroll to one of the many grocery stores in the area.

Residents here are usually students or other university affiliates. The residents enjoy the convenience of living near a lot of action and are willing to endure the traffic and street noise that goes along with all the fun.

Sawtelle — 8.1/10 Rating (based on 82 neighborhood reviews)
I love living in Sawtelle! There is so much to do here and amazing food. It feels more calm and safe than close to UCLA. I feel comfortable walking my dog at night and saying hi to my neighbors. I highly recommend for graduate students since it is so close to campus.

This neighborhood has a lot of UCLA Anderson students, it's close to campus, as well as some good ramen and bar options. I like living in this area because even though I don't have a car, I can always find a ride with a fellow student in the area or take the bus which is very close. Also, I like being within walking distance of restaurants.

Nice because it's 10 minutes to school, 10 minutes to the ocean, and typically <5 minutes to 75% of Anderson students with all the apartment units in this area. Could use a better going out scene, but Ubers/Lyfts are short and cheap ($6-$10) to Santa Monica or West Hollywood, and that extra inconvenience is probably for the best.

The neighborhood is very affordable. With roommates you can easily afford almost any newer apartment building as a grad student. It is also close to campus - really pays off when you have a 4 PM class and you need to get to school during rush hour. Also many fellow Anderson students live in the area which is nice.

Being close to Santa Monica is amazing. You really could take a break during the day and go to an amazing beach for a couple hours. Very few locations offer that.

I wish the neighborhood was more walkable. Driving/parking during lunch and dinner rushes is a nightmare.

25 minutes driving to school in rush traffic. 15 minutes otherwise. Neighborhood is quiet and safe, but a range of bars, shops, restaurants, grocery stores, etc. are within walking and short driving/uber range. Bus and metro stops are both fairly close. Easy highway access to both the 405 and the 10. Price range is cheaper than Brentwood or Santa Monica.

Pros:
1) Great food (ramen and Mexican especially)
2) Proximity to grocery stores, campus and bars
3) Safe
4) Proximity to a lot of Anderson students (5-10 minutes walking)

Cons:
1) Street parking can be difficult to find
2) Can hit some heavy overflow traffic from the 405, Santa Monica, and Wilshire

Great neighborhood - we recently had an influx of new bars which is nice. This is technically West LA, but walking distance to some awesome ramen restaurants on Sawtelle. Easy to walk over to San Vicente for coffee on weekend mornings, and easy to get down to Santa Monica via SM Blvd.

Pros:
- Close drive to UCLA campus w/ easy access to 405
- Can pick up #1 bus from Santa Monica and Sawtelle bus to UCLA
- Given the area, street parking is not too difficult to find
- Easy walk to Sawtelle for food
- Rent is reasonable given the area
- Small complex with only 12 units so there's not too much noise
- Management is very responsive

Cons:
- Non-master bedrooms are pretty small and one of them has a stand-up shower (not a bathtub)
- Appliances and apartment doesn't feel very "modern" (though everything works)
