Great Apartment

Very nice apartment building with easy access to two metro stations on a quiet street. The building staff is nice and welcoming and it is kept very clean.

Heart of DC - Caring Community Building

I've lived in this building for 4+ years and have no intention of leaving. The rent, while high, is appropriate for the location and amenities provided. There is no pool, but that is the only "downfall" I can pinpoint. The gym has enough cardio machines that I never have to wait for a turn at my desired machine, and the spin/yoga room is a unique addition you don't see at every building! The front desk staff are incredibly welcoming and helpful; they each make an effort to build a relationship with the residents they encounter.

Great High-End Community

Avalon is a great place to live with friendly staff and tenants, nice amenities and a great central location for bars, events and activities. Downsides are the cost is higher than other areas and it's about a 30 minute commute to school (walking, bus or metro).

Avalon Apartments

So, this apartment is conveniently located and really nice, clean. That being said, I think that if you aren't in a crunch there is definitely a better opportunity to find a better "bang for you buck." I think (relatively) for DC the neighborhood is fairly safe.

Community Feel

I am a big fan of Avalon & the community. I'm pleased to live here and I'm delighted with the management's professionalism & commitment. It has a great community feel. The building itself is also great. Good location in Chinatown near the metro, Verizon Center, and a bunch of restaurants and bars. The front door staff are very friendly and take the time to get to know the residents.

Great Building & Location!

Our building is great. The common areas (lobby, gym, hallways, etc) have jsut been updated and look amazing. We have a gym, 24 hour concierge, and huge rooftop with grills! Gallery Place metro (red, yellow, and green lines) is just a couple blocks away, and Metro Center (orange, silver, and blue lines) is a 10 minute walk! It is also easy and quick to walk or uber to most other neighborhoods (Shaw, U St, 14th St, DuPont, H St, NoMa, Georgetown, Downtonw, etc!).

Avalon

Nice and convenient place to live in. Close to lots of good restaurants and bars. Walking distance to grocery shopping (Safeway) and metro stations (Gallery Place). Union station and DCA are also within 15 mins driving distance. Lots of young adults in the building.

Great place to live

Great building with great management. It is a little older building with slightly fewer amenities than others in the neighborhood but it is a great value for the location and size of the apartment with great door men. Rooftop with grills. Gym. Spin room.

Nice place to live with modern amenities

We've lived here for less than a year but really enjoy it. The building has great amenities (free coffee every morning, a nice gym, a nice, big rooftop with grills) and the nicest people working at the front desk. The location is great - we are a 5 minute walk from the Gallery Place metro station and Verizon Center, and only a 10 minute walk down to the Mall or a 15 minute walk to the White House. The only downside is that nothing is really included in the rent - utilities (water, electric, gas) and parking ($190/mo) are extra - and our apartment is unfortunately on the alley side of the building so we hear the loud noises of the garbage trucks every morning. Additionally, there is construction going on about 50 feet away from our window on the other side of the alley which has been very disruptive for us as they start every morning at 7am. But hopefully this construction will be over soon.

Chinatown Reviews

10 reviews
Chinatown is great because there is always something to do and lots of good bars and food nearby (and it's just a short walk to the Safeway). The area feels safe because there are always people around. That said, all the excitement means it can be loud and Verizon Center events can clog up public transportation. Biggest downside is the distance from campus.
Very safe and lots of restaurants and bars. It is great for dinner and happy hour. Very close to the mall and all the monuments. Great for running and outdoor activities. Life night and day.
Penn Quarter is a great neighborhood because you are really at the center of the city. It is walking distance to the Capitol, White House, and monuments. You are in the heart of the museum district with access to several of DC's famous museums. The restaurants and bars are great and have a ton of variety.
Tons of awesome restaurants nearby! If you’re more of a bar hopper it’s perhaps not for you, but close metro means those spots are a 10 min ride away!
Lots of people around for events at Verizon center and lots of homeless people, but otherwise an ideal neighborhood
Good for the most part. Was rough during the pandemic with less crowds and political turmoil with them boarding up everything, but I like it overall.

Also, the homeless problem in the area has worsened over time, but there is 24/7 security around City Center, so that issue is somewhat mitigated.
I enjoy the fact that there are numerous places to eat and happy hour at in the neighborhood. My only complaint is that it doesnt necessarily have a "club" or "lounge spot".
The area is safe and easily accessible by bus and metro. You can access the Red, Blue/Orange and Yellow/Green within a few blocks of walking. The area is close to Chinatown but far enough away if you want a break from all the people and. There are great restaurants and bars that are great for both residents and those new to DC.
