West of State

Residential Area and Removed from the College Scene
The West of State is an ideal neighborhood for shoppers, students, and families. It’s a quiet neighborhood yet close to the bustling downtown area so it's suitable if one is looking for entertainment or a night out. For dining, there are many choices catering to people who love a variety of food - like Westside Barbecue, Pacific Rim by Kana, Miki Japanese Restaurant, Madras Masala, and Conor O’Neill’s, an Irish pub with live music and fun events. For people looking for a restful break, there is the always quaint Wurster Park.

Renters should know this area is generally viewed as a relaxed neighborhood with its tree-lined streets and single family homes.

West of State — 8.4/10 Rating (based on 305 neighborhood reviews)
It is a quiet neighborhood with a great mixture of residential houses, apartments, and lots of great parks. It's only a short 15-minute walk to downtown and the law school. Having a car has made living in the neighborhood much easier as there are no grocery stores within walking distance or easily accessible by foot.

I love the Old West Side because it's a quieter neighborhood with parks, trees, single family homes, and neighborhood traditions like the Old West Side Home Tour and the Westside Art Hop. If you're trying to escape from undergrads, I'd highly recommend looking into the Old West Side.

I live at the edge of Old West Side (618 South Main), which is less than a 10 minute walk to the law school (a straight shot up Madison Ave). Although Old West Side doesn't have a lot of restaurants or bars, it's only a 7 minute walk to all of the downtown restaurants and bars. Old West Side is home to some of my favorite places: Washtenaw Dairy, Jefferson Market, and Argus Farm Stop. There's also plans to put in a new brewery on First Street.

The area is pretty residential. It's close to the Big House but not close to a lot of eateries. Downtown is 1 mile away so it's close but it's not close enough for something you want to pick up quickly. More eateries are closer to Ross, half a mile away. Overall, though, the neighborhood is great, not surrounded by a lot of fraternities (only one) so the noise is minimal.

Straight road out south around the stadium/golf course for a beautiful 5 mile run closer to open spaces. We happen to live extremely close to the stadium, which has been great for football games. The neighborhood is generally very quiet and residential, except for on game days. My one complaint is that it is a bit of a food desert -- you have to walk several blocks for restaurants or cafes, and the easiest food access is a 7/11 which obviously doesn't fit every need. Overall though it is very walkable so it isn't difficult to travel to restaurants, cafes or grocery stores.

I really like our neighborhood for its location, primarily in the sense that we can get to school, 'downtown,' the Big House, IM gym, late night food spots, friends pretty easily. However, I wouldn't say that there is anything distinctive about where we live in and of itself. I think this stems from being located on Packard, which is a pretty busy main street. Bottom line: live here for the central location less than the community here.

It's a three minute walk from the law school, which is what I cared about. I don't have a car so I value walking to school and the gym, and this neighborhood is perfect for that. If you're looking for bars and restaurants and a social scene, this is not the neighborhood for you. There are a few fast food places (Jimmy Johns, Baba Dari, Cottage Inn, Dominos) right there and two liquor stores, one which has basic everyday needs like toilet paper and trash bags. The worst thing, for me, is that there are no nearby coffee shops. It is also very walkable (10-15 mins) to downtown. I think Ann Arbor is small enough that I don't mind not necessarily being in the thick of things.

Lots of students. The apartment complex is a mix of grad students and undergrads. No families, but the tree-lined street has an almost suburban feel. Rest of the neighborhood is undergrad students and feels college-y.

As I said about the apartment itself, the neighborhood is near train tracks. You will hear trains at night/during day/early morning and the marching band rehearsal during the fall. If you are a light sleeper, this may not be the neighborhood for you. However, I did have concerns about safety initially being near the tracks and a lumber yard, however, I have only had a safe experience thus far. I actually like that its easy to drive and park at (street parking available most days - a rarity in Ann Arbor). Also, it is near a 7-11 (convenient!). Great location for football Saturdays.

The Yard's specific location isn't bad. It's a 20 minute (or less) walk from downtown, Ross, The Big House, and the IM. It shares problems with most of the neighborhoods close to campus though in that there is no walk-able access to grocery stores or really stores of any kind, and also very little convenient parking. The Yard has indoor spots for $200 per month, so I would factor that in and plan on using your car if you like to cook your own meals and meal prep.

Immediately adjacent to the apartment for about 3 blocks in every direction there's nothing really but a 7/11, which is a little disappointing when you just want to run down and grab a coffee or something really quickly. My preference for an apartment had a radius of 3 blocks from Ross. I wanted to be close to Munger, but didn't want to live at Munger (80% chance you won't have a window). I also wanted to be on the same side of campus as downtown Ann Arbor, so I wouldn't have to walk through campus to get there. This location is unique in that it's centrally located for Rossers, but doesn't have a lot of noise and is relatively safe due to its surrounding streets and graduate residences nearby.

This neighborhood is a ~6 minute walk to Ross.

The biggest draw of this neighborhood is the people! More students live in this area than probably any other, which means there are always people to hang out with. This neighborhood is super close to campus and bus stops, which is awesome! One warning is the farther south you go, the deeper you get into "undergrad territory." That means more parties and more noise. On gamedays, I can hear tailgates and crowds which doesn't bother me too much, as I'm so close to campus I can easily go to the library or another on-campus study spot. Living at the very north end, near State & Packard, is great though!

There's not much in the immediate vicinity other than a 7/11, but you can get anywhere. It's pretty much equidistant to hot spots--the stadium, downtown Ann Arbor (especially the popular Bill's Beer Garden, Circ, and Blank Slate Creamery), and Ross--so you don't NEED a car, but if you have and plan to bring a car, parking is indoor and secure ($200/month extra), and then you have the world at your fingertips (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Target, Costco, etc. all 10-15 min away by car). There are convenient ZipCars nearby if you don't have a car and want to rent one for a few hours!
