Great place to call home

I have lived in the Avalon for over 2 years, i was the first tenant in my apt and I couldn't be happier with the service and amenitites this apartment building provides. The location leaves alot to be desired, but the pro's outweigh the cons.

Awesome building

This apartment building is good and has great amenities. The fitness center is pretty nice and I use the business center pretty regularly. Management has been pretty easy to work with for the most part. The location is pretty good, but NoMa still needs more restaurants and things to do. I can also hear my neighbors fairly frequently. Hasn't been a huge deal, but could be really annoying if we had louder neighbors.

Avalon

The apartment is great, however it can get noisy and you can hear your neighbors (especially those with dogs). The amenities are amazing (grill, rooftop pool, fully equipped gym, doggy laundry room, and more)! The location is great in that it's right by a grocery store and metro, but there isn't much to do in the area so you'll definitely be needing that metro! The management is great, however things do get broken frequently (ie elevators). They get fixed, but it does take some time.

Love the building, not the location

The Avalon First+M is amazing- the amenities make it well worth the price, but the location does not

Amazing place but too far away, neighborhood is sketchy

Avalon First and M is a great building. The community is very nice and the management is always willing to help with a smile on their face. The amenities are awesome such as the rooftop pool and the gym Nevertheless, I found it to be far from school. If you don't mind taking the metro everyday a couple of times per day, then you'll be fine. Also, the neighborhood may get kind of sketchy. There's a club named Ibiza nearby that doesn't attract the best crowd. There was once a shooting between two men in front of this club. The area doesn't have many option in terms of food and there's nothing social to do (not counting Ibiza, of course).

NoMa Reviews

I don't venture too far outside of the few blocks of NoMa because outside of the neighborhood isn't as safe. However, the city has done a lot to revamp the area in the past few years, so there are new restaurants and bars opening up. I also live right across the street from the metro, which makes the rest of the city much more accessible.
NoMa is approximately a 35 minute commute to GWU. However, my roommate works on the hill which is less than 10 minutes away. There is a Harris Teeter connected to the building so you don't even have to go outside in order to shop for groceries. The area is still up and coming, so some of the surrounding streets don't seem very safe. However, it is getting better each and every day and it is easy to avoid those streets.
It's an up and coming neighborhood though I live in the very nice part of it. It's rough across North Capitol, but there's nothing over there to go to so I never run into any issues. There's a big dog park as well as plenty to do and eat at Union Market.
Neighborhood is okay. Everything is walkable. Bars/restaurants/grocery stores are super close by. Parking is usually available. Super safe (just don't go near the NY Ave Wendys after dark)
NoMa is up and coming - there are not too many places to eat/socialize in the evenings but the neighborhood is close enough to H Street that you don't feel too stranded.
It's growing like crazy but seriously lacks on the dining/nightlife portion. I like the geography and with the REI opening I'm hoping the nightlife will shift as well.
Fairly safe, though I wouldn't roam around a lot at night. It's certainly a transitioning neighborhood. Lots of people with dogs, big and small.
Noma is a cool area with young professionals mainly and has a lot of food/bar options! It's about 30 min from campus via metro, 20 min driving, (don't walk to campus). The apartment itself is super safe, as is the immediately surrounding area. But it isn't safe to walk west of the area or too far north either.
