Capitol

The Heart of Madison
Capitol Square in Madison, Wisconsin, is located at 2 East Main Street, where State Street meets Capitol Square. Capitol is said to be one of the best destinations for shopping, dining, and entertainment for locals and tourists.

Here, the area is alive with events like music festivals, concerts, races, dances, and jazz festivals. The Dane County Capitol Square South Ramp allows 1,000 vehicles in its garage, which many people find helpful. It allows for easy access to the downtown farmers’ market, summer concerts, the Wisconsin State Capitol building, Art Fairs, and about 80 area restaurants.

Capitol — 8.9/10 Rating (based on 122 neighborhood reviews)
I feel VERY safe on the east side of the Capitol. My apartment is only a couple blocks from city hall and the justice department so there is a comforting level of police presence. There is so much to do within walking distance including restaurants and bars, Lake Monona, and lots of free events around the Capitol and Capitol square like the weekly farmer’s market and concerts on the square.

Great location! In a residential area, so you don’t have to listen to people yelling and waking from bar to bar like you would if you lived closer to downtown. With that said, you are only 2 blocks from the Capitol and 3-4 blocks from state street. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the Madison night life but still be able to go home and sleep in peace.

Being so close to everything - restaurants, bars, the overture, the comedy clubs, the capital square - there is always something going on. Despite that, you can't Hear the neighborhood from your apartment- the walls are thick. The best of both worlds!

Also, I feel super safe here in this building. The fire department is connected to our building- but you barely hear them (even being right over them). They usually - at least at night- try to start their sirens once they go down the street.

I've always felt comfortable in this neighborhood, and there is also enough activity to feel social. Football days such as Packer's game days are fun to hear the crowds at echo but it's typically quiet in this area. I find it convenient to have the CVS and a restaurant nearby and it's walking distance to classes.

Best neighborhood out there. I lived right off state street near Short Stack Eatery. State street can be a little noisy at times with a lot of cop and fire services vehicle running around with loud sirens. There is a tad bit of crime and homeless people on state street but it receives a lot of attention from cops and state street is usually always crowded so I was never quite concerned. Walking around the Capitol at night, which is 3 mins from my home, with an ice-cream from Kilwins is defintely worth any minor issues living downtown! There are a ton of food options and as someone who never cooked I absolutely loved staying off state street or around the Capitol. Bus connectivity is awesome and I never felt the need for a car. Great option for bachelors looking for some nightlife and great restaurants just a walk away. Free parking is usually tough to find.
