Amazing Place to Live, but SOOO Overpriced!

10 management rating Reviewed by on

I love living at Avira. Both the front desk and maintenance staff are great, and management is responsive on weekdays. Every employee is friendly, and packages are handled securely. There is only one issue that involves our trash shoot on our floor, which has yet to be solved since we moved in, but it is minor, and there's a workaround, so we can't really complain. All utilities are included except electric (we pay about $20/month for that for 2 of us in a 1-bedroom). WiFi and Renters Insurance are also not included. Parking is also an add-on for a whopping $350/month, and covered parking isn't guaranteed, so we hard-passed on that, considering we are already paying $2.8k/month.

The whole amenity floor is the 9th floor of the building, which includes an outdoor pool, outdoor lawn with movie screen (although this has been used by the building a whopping 2 times since we moved in in July), outdoor grills, indoor lounge spaces, indoor game room, and plenty of indoor study/conference spaces, too. There is a fitness center with plenty of cardio equipment, a decent set of strength equipment (as a lifter, it could be better), a pilates machine (in its own room), a mini yoga studio, and a bigger yoga/dance studio where they host fitness classes ~once/week. Only downside is that sometimes they reserve the amenity floor for private events (not including the fitness studio), limiting how much you can use it despite adding $50/month/person to your base rent. It is also shared with the businesses that house the 2nd-8th floors of the building, so keep that in mind. Businesses have those floors, and residents have floors 10-27.

We never have an issue with our appliances, but if we do, maintenance takes hardly a couple of hours to respond. We have a view of the train yard, which some people don't like, but I do not mind at all. I also don't mind the train noises, but my partner does. If you are a light sleeper and refuse to wear earplugs to block out the train noise, then do not live here lol. Also, they will be constructing a brand new building between the East side of Avira and 30th St Station within the next year if I had to guess that timeline, so keep that in mind for construction noise! The apartment itself is nice, but it could be bigger considering how much we pay for rent. It does have plenty of kitchen cabinet space, but aside from that, there is like no storage space, and the bedroom closet is so small (and we have one of the bigger ones for the one-bedrooms...).

The neighborhood is very safe, but more than half the residents in this building are Drexel and Penn students and I feel like I am back in college walking through the halls and as soon as I step out the front door onto Drexel's campus. Best part aside from the safety of the location is the proximity to 30th St Station. I just personally don't like the University feel, but that may just be a me thing. Most nightlife/restaurants/bars in Philly that are worth going to are more than a 20 min walk away in Rittenhouse and Center City. It is within walking distance to HUP and CHOP though, which is awesome.

Despite how much we love it here, nothing can justify the price. $2.8k, not including electric, WiFi, parking, or insurance, is insane for this tiny place, and we are on one of the lowest floors you can live on. We likely will not be renewing our lease in the summer because of the price, and we also don't particularly enjoy feeling like we are living on an undergrad campus. No other place in Philly we have looked at is this expensive, and there are plenty of similar, if not better, apartments/condos out there with lower, more reasonable prices. You really can get it all here if you are willing to pay $3k+/month for a 1-bed 1-bath on an undergrad campus. Also were really upset to see Avira was leasing apartments higher than ours and with much larger square footage (had a Den added) for at least $200/month cheaper than what we pay, soon after we moved in. This $2.8k/

Nice place to live but not worth the money in my opinion. I will likely move out once my lease expires.

It is about a 7 minute walk to campus, and you are right next to 30th street station! The building is very secure and has great amenities (including a pool)

Live close to the school 1L. You can always move away (and many do!). But that first year you'll appreciate the convenience.

This building is nice. The gym is great and it has stellar study areas. It is a bit pricey. It is also about as close to Center City as you can be while still in University City. It's nice - 15 minute walk to the law school, 20 to downtown.

Management is also fantastic here. I have never had an issue that takes longer than 36 hours to be handled (even weekends).

Very nice building

The Atlas is a great building with very nice apartments. Our apartment had new kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures when we moved in, and the overall design is fairly modern and sleek. It has a ton of closets so we have lots of storage space. We also have big windows in the living room and get a lot of sunlight. The building has a great gym and a laundry room on the 5th floor, which is very convenient. It's also pet-friendly, so that is nice. The only issue is that there are only four elevators in the building and they run fairly slowly, but otherwise I have very few complaints. The building management is helpful and responsive, and the maintenance staff fixes issues in the apartments very promptly. The doormen are also all very nice and friendly.

Really excellent staff and really accommodating - they take the time to get to know you and make your experience better.

Would highly recommend to anyone looking for an apartment in the area.

The only drawback would be the distance from public transit.

Nice place, a little far from everything

Nice amenities, a little far from public transit, but they do have a shuttle for the weekday commute. They have a gym and rooftop area, large common area as well. There is a food market adjacent to the building as well as a bike shop. Nice building, but not amazing
