McMahon Hall

Other than the bed being a little flimsy, I think it has everything I could ask for. Perfect housing for a law student, I think. Also, the doors are really loud so that if you don't carefully close them quietly, they can be really loud.

The downside is the ambulance late at night that can be disturbing. But otherwise no complaint.

I lived in McMahon Hall my first year of law school. It is the best option. On campus. Clean and quiet.

There are fewer insects than last year, and way fewer than two years ago, but I did notice that one or two silverfish came out and chewed up some of my sweaters without being detected. Other than that, the windows don't always open properly, and it's a bit noisy on this side of the building, since we face the hospital (sirens into the night). Otherwise, maintenance comes quickly when we have an issue, and security is always friendly and they take their job seriously.

That said, the room I got this time was pretty small.

Great place. Would recommend to others.

Apartment contains three private rooms that share a bathroom, kitchen and living area. Facilities are in decent, not great condition. Cleanliness is up to the residents so you get out what you put in.

I am very happy that I chose to live in McMahon as a 1L. As a student who came to Fordham Law immediately after being an undergraduate, I ultimately was deciding between living with my undergrad friends elsewhere in Manhattan and living in McMahon; I could not be happier with my decision. I can still see my undergrad friends when I want, and living in McMahon has been a tremendous boon to my academics. I can more easily concentrate on my classes since I have no commute and live with other law students who are as focused on school as I am (as opposed to my good friends from college, who all have full-time jobs and do no work after 5pm). I am very grateful for having the luxury and convenience of being able to have a five minute walk from my bedroom directly to my classrooms. I get more sleep now than I would if I were to be commuting from elsewhere in the city, and can easily go back to my apartment between classes to nap or cook food if needed. Perhaps most importantly, I never need to "convince" myself to go to the library since doing so is so convenient . Being so close to the law school as a 1L has been absolutely crucial to my academics this year. It has kept me incredibly motivated and engaged in my studies, and I will never regret my decision to live in McMahon during my first year of law school.

I lived in a single room in McMahon Hall. I am a law student though and believe undergrads split the tiny room I was assigned - I dont know how that's possible. The room itself is quiet. Good temperature control. Bathroom is cleaned weekly. Great bathroom - industrial shower+toilet. Walls are thick so you can't hear anything outside of your room. Decent size. Comes with full kitchen and fridge and stove with sink. For a student, it was great. It's attached to the law school so you never need to step outside. Great location next to columbus circle. The downers: (1) LAUNDRY IS AWFUL. LITERALLY 95% MACHINES ARE BROKEN. I used an outside service because the machines never worked. They were installed in the 1990s and if they break, they just keep them there. (2) DOORMAN WILL NOT ALLOW OVERNIGHT GUESTS. If you bring them inside and let them stay over, you will be charged. (3) Bed is a typical dorm bed, but I found it really tiny. (4) Room is ridiculously expensive compared to rest of NY. You can get a similarly sized 3 bedroom for 1400 in a luxury high rise a block away. (Look at AVALON NYC).

There are some aspects in general that I think no law school student will welcome. Having an RA again, after most of us have lived at least one year without one in undergrad, is a major pain. The gym always has at least one treadmill broken (seriously, its astonishing how out of repair these things are. Within a couple of hours our windows can get fixed but it takes a whole semester to repair one treadmill?). The convenience to the law school is huge though, and its more than roomy enough.

The walls were all ripped up in my bedroom when I moved in, and the heating unit is rusted. The staff is nice, and maintenance fixes things promptly, but when I moved in, the walls were in terrible condition. Housing should issue rooms in decent condition, not with parts of the wall ripped off. And last year, there was a big silverfish problem that persisted in a different apartment.

It;s also very noisy outside. Construction noises occur at the weirdest times in the middle of the night.
