Alphabet City has been a great place to live in New York - there are a lot of bars and restaurants around, so it's relatively easy to convince friends to go out around the neighborhood. The walks to the closest subways (the L, F, and 6 trains) are relatively pleasant, and it's easy to walk over to the East Side Parkway if you're interested in running by the river. It feels like a pretty central location without being too much in the thick of it - Avenue B is quieter than Avenue A, and Avenue C is quieter than Avenue B with regards to noise. There are usually people out and about, so it's safe to walk home late at night.
lots of bars and restaurants around. Mostly people under the age of 35, not very many children. People can party and be loud and not worry about it. Not very much to do on the "activities" front though.
The East Village has an amazing social scene that is really worth experiencing if you can. There are tons of great bars and restaurants, including a number of landmarks/icons like Mcsorley's (literally in a popular 1912 painting) and Katz's Deli. It is particularly nice because you can access the rest of NYC fairly easily via the 4,5,6 or N,R, while still being able to walk to some of the harder to access spots like the LES.
Great. We live definitely closer to the West side - as in by Union Square. The farther east you go the idea is it becomes less safe. Lots to do, lots to see, and a straight shot to school
Fun, great bars and restaurants, not easiest access to subway, but still manageable. Has a decent amount of supermarkets, both high end and economical. Walking distance from NYU.
I was new to NYC when I came to Stern, and my first place was in the East Village. I recently moved to another building in the same neighborhood. The East Village can not be beat in terms of bars/restaurants and night life. It is also incredibly convenient in terms of proximity to NYU.
East village provides a great location to live. The location is only a ~15 minute walk to school and the neighborhood is great for restaurants, bars, shops and more. The one drawback is that the apartments are generally smaller and somehow seem more expensive.
Getting towards the shadier part of the East Village, but I've never felt in danger. Google "East Village" and everything you read is probably true. Great nightlife, loud, and affordable depending on where you decide to stop in.
