Downtown Richmond

Heart of Richmond
Downtown is known as the central business district in Richmond. It is flourishing with culture and offers plenty to do! The Edgar Allen Poe Museum is a popular spot for art lovers. Edgar Allen Poe himself used to live on the same block. It now honors his long-lasting legacy. The Virginia War Memorial nearby is one of the more prominent historical landmarks, opened back in 1956. Monroe Park is another attraction on the outskirts of town. It is packed with different events, rallies, and holds historical statues.

Downtown has a very exciting restaurant and bar scene. Common spots for a happy hour after work or a night out include Citizen, Cobblestone Bar & Grill, The Hard Shell, Morton's The Steakhouse, and Southern Railway Taphouse. Bars to get a drink at including Penny Lane Pub, Rosie Connolly's Pub Restaurant, Old City Bar, The Local Eatery and Pub, and GWARbar. Downtown Richmond is a great choice for city life with plenty of hotspots in the surrounding area to enjoy.

Downtown Richmond — 8.2/10 Rating (based on 19 neighborhood reviews)
Some parts may seem sketchy, but not as much as if you further downtown. It is a very becoming place, and there are lots of young people living around. Plus, it is still in the VCU vicinity, and thus it policed by their police, not only Richmond police. There is a public library around the corner; amazing restaurant, and a famous historical inn.

Shockoe Bottom has a decent restaurant/bar scene as well as some clubs. It's close to downtown so if you're working there it's a good option. Rent is getting steeper as more investment is made in the surrounding communities so that's worth watching. There's only one (overpriced) grocery store nearby and public transportation leaves a lot to be desired but that's supposedly changing. The area has a ton of character and the flip side to more investment in the area is greater amenities.

It is close/basically on VCU campus so those areas aren't too unsafe. However, certain areas are very sketchy. Right behind our apartment feels very unsafe. Lots of restaurants nearby on Broad St.

Love the neighborhood. It's only growing/expanding. Close to work for most people. Not noisy at all. Farm Fresh grocery store is nearby (a 20min walk, or short uber away).

It's kind of on the border with downtown; but we are surrounded by growing trendy restaraunt scene, city library, and classy Franklin street neighborhood (VCU area with its security). Thus, although there are homeless people walking around, generally, I don't feel unsafe walking by myself in the evening. In short, it's not as dangerous as people may think, but of course it is not perfect.

The neighborhood is close to the medical campus for VCU which is great for my roommate being a dental student. one block from a farm fresh and numerous little restaurants within walking distance. One con is the train down there is loud but I have gotten used to it and it doesnt wake me up.

I don't venture out much because of COVID, but I know there's a bookstore nearby and some local restaurants (it's also right across the street from a Buffalo Wild Wings). I think I'll enjoy living in downtown a lot more when it's safe to go to the bars and stuff again.
