Oregon Hill

The Student Quarter
Overlooking the James River, Oregon Hill is a neighborhood often referred to as a student quarter. Close to Virginia Commonwealth University campus, Oregon Hill is a great student environment. Many students choose to live here to take advantage of a quick and convenient commute. Although it is mostly considered a working-class area, Oregon Hill has been experiencing a resurgence, along with growing infrastructure. This growth makes Oregon Hill a neighborhood to keep an eye on. Most of the historic buildings in town were built during the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War.

Oregon Hill also benefits from all of the spots available for either food or drink. Many of them are highly rated online and have tons of recommendations. Restaurants in the area include L'opossum, Lemaire, Rappahannock Restaurant, Heritage Restaurant, and Deep Run Roadhouse. Bars for some drinks and socializing with friends include Penny Lane Pub, Belle, Wonderland, GWARbar, and Old City Bar. Oregon Hill is a great spot to live, especially when attending classes at VCU.

Oregon Hill — 6.5/10 Rating (based on 2 neighborhood reviews)
I have not had any issues and the neighborhood gets nicer as you get towards the river. No stolen packages, no car break-ins, etc... even with the heavy foot traffic at the overlook we have had no issues. The start of Oregon Hill is not very nice with mostly run down townhouses that college students rent. Overall, this is safe neighborhood where we live with can't beat views.

Great out of the way neighborhood. New (2007) at the end where the house is. Easy walking to river, Belle Island, Brown Island, Northbank trail. Great views. Downside is the amount of pedestrians going to the river. Makes it feel safe however. No night scene in the neighborhood. Mamazoo's amazing food is a 3 minute walk. Commute around 25 minutes. Belvidere to 95 to 64 west.
