Great area
The area by Union square is amazing, with the obvious downside of price. Amazing in the fact that you have very close access to the subway (something I didn't place enough importance on when moving to the city), it is near the center of manhattan (so not difficult to make either east or west visits, and an 8 minute walk door to door to school. As far as price goes - up to you want to pay $200-400 dollars less for a 1 bedroom, but in my mind I wouldn't trade. Oh and they have their own Dry cleaning and Laundry service
