A real neighborhood experience with normal people
I grew up in Sunnyside and I knew I wanted to move back here when I started school at Stern; it has a wonderful neighborhood-y, community feel, unlike many other places in NYC. It's also located right on the 7 line (#1 subway line in the city: http://www.straphangers.org/statesub15/) and within walking distance to a plethora of different restaurants, bars, and parks. It's a great neighborhood if you have kids or a dog, too, and it's super safe. Parking can be a little tricky to find on the street but it's feasible to keep a car in Sunnyside. Tons of grocery stores, lots of diversity within the community, and most importantly, it feels like a place to LIVE instead of just a place to stay.

-It's pretty quiet and community oriented
-Close to lots of grocery stores and so many restaurants
-The 7 train is great
-You can have a car here
-You get waaaay more space for your money and housing is more affordable than most places in Manhattan/Brooklyn
-If you want a place with a 3AM club scene though, this is not it. There are a lot of fun bars in the area but they're not filled with hard partiers.
-Inventory in the rental/buying market moves REALLY quickly
