Not bad but not great

Overall OK. Pros are distance from hospital, cheaper rent, and security of the building (24/7 front desk person who takes all packages, scans IDs of visitors, monitors cameras etc). Apartment is pretty spacious as well. Cons are noise level (busy street and get a lot of city noise pollution and the building’s older construction does poorly blocking it out), no central air or heat, no laundry in the apartment (shared in basement), no dishwasher/outdated and very small kitchen.

I love it here

I moved into The Chancellor shortly before my school year started after doing a lot of research online. I absolutely love my apartment. It's a tad smaller than some of my other classmates' apartments but I feel that I have more than enough room for myself. The apartment is clean and everything works pretty well. Maintenance has been prompt whenever I needed something. The laundry, mail, and trash facilities are easy to use. The location is impossible to beat, especially if you use the PATCO or like to enjoy the Washington Square West/Center City area. I plan to live here all throughout my schooling.

I enjoy living here

Chancellor is a great option for someone looking to live affordably in a great location in Center City. It is extremely close to TJUH, among other popular tourist locations such as Reading Terminal, City Hall, Convention Center, etc. The apartment itself is on the older side; it does not have central air, uses radiator heat, and there are no dishwashers or laundry in unit. However, these are smaller compromises for the sake of affordable rent. Security is one of the strengths--always a front desk person who buzzes visitors in, watches cameras, holds packages for you, etc. Shared living spaces like laundry room and entrance are nice and clean.

Amazing place to live at an amazing price

This building is the hidden gem of center city. I've lived in two other apartments, and all pale in comparison to my apartment at the Chancellor. I have a large, all wood-floored, high-floor apartment with amazing views of the city. The apartment came extremely clean, the maintenance staff is responsive, and the doormen and women are so kind. While the Chancellor is an older building, it has a lot of character, and it is meticulously taken care of. Water included, radiator heat included which is extremely sufficient. Only downside is no central air, but management will install your window units for free. Electric bills have ranged from 15-45 dollars per month, which is so affordable! Highly recommend.

Everything is perfect except the price

Management is kind and prompt to follow-up on issues, security guards are professional and kind, neighbors are friendly and respectful, the whole place is spotless, elevators work 80% of the time (which is alright with me), laundry in the basement (works 80% of the time which is not okay with me because it takes my money). Downfalls: my studio apt does not include a freezer (just a mini fridge, so I brought my own), it’s located in a noisy area (I turn on my fan but sometimes it’s still super loud- but that’s just center city living). The price is a big downfall although it’s very cheap for a studio on 13th. This was found as emergency housing- I know I can find cheaper studios for $700-$750 still north of Washington. Ideally, that’s where I’d be. But everything else is so nice about the apartment that if you can afford it, I highly recommend Chancellor.

Midtown Village Reviews

Access to restaurants, attractions, and shops in Center City and even nearby in South Philly or Rittenhouse Square is superb. There is generally a lot of street traffic and drug addiction and homelessness are common in the area, but typically not a source of harm for passersby and also not much different than in any other major urban center in the U.S.
Best neighborhood in Center City - can't beat the price for what you get. Amazing location, just a short walk to Rittenhouse or Old City. Can't beat living in the heart of Center City, and only a 7 minute walk to the hospital. Plenty of night life.
Some crime in the area, but overall, great bar and restaurant scene with easy access to public transit.
Center city is arguably safe but sometimes there are some issues. Police are responsive.
Midtown Village is quickly becoming one of the best places in Philly to live. The quick downside is there's a lot of construction in the area, but that's also the positive if you're okay with the feel of a city that's constantly changing. The area already has lots of great bars and restaurants, and all the new construction is adding in great new options for grocery, coffee, and convenience items. There's now a Target, Mom's Grocery, multiple Wawas, Sweetgreen, etc. all in close proximity to mainstays like Reading Terminal.
Midtown Village is a fast-growing and both has great mainstay restaurants like El Vez and Barbuzzo as well as amazing chains like Chipotle and Sweet Green. The addition of a Target, Wawa, CVS, Starbucks, and Petco makes it even more accessible and naturally the location is as central as you can be in Philadelphia. In comparing options, you usually can get a bit of a discount versus Rittenhouse Square and Old City, mainly because the Midtown Village brand is still being built up, but you really can't beat the location and access to amenities. The only thing it's missing is a full-service grocery store, but between Reading Terminal Market, Target, Walgreens, and CVS you're pretty set. The main downside can be the noise and litter that comes with being in the heart of downtown, but it's a trade off I'm more than willing to make and has been getting better with time.
I love this neighborhood! It's very lively and great for young adults. There are a lot of cool restaurants/bars around. It's a little pricey but what can you expect from being in the center of a city like Philadelphia?
The area is filled with lots of young people. I don't feel unsafe walking around even at night because there are people out all the time. There are a couple of narrow streets I probably wouldn't walk through though.
The neighborhood is amazing and getting better every day! It combines access to great daily conveniences (coffee shops, Target, Wawa, etc.) with some of the best independent restaurants and bars in Philly. The location is incredibly central overall and transit options can get you pretty much anywhere in the city. It can get a bit noisy, though that's the price you pay for being downtown.
