American Heritage Apartments

Mixed feelings about this building. It is a 10 minute walk to MCV hospital and the medical campus, which is amazing, but it is in a bad area of downtown. It's not uncommon to come home after an evening out and find a puddle of pee on the front stoop. What makes this apartment terrible is the management. Although Ross Management apparently owns other properties, I swear it is a ghost company. I have called at least a dozen times over the past 3 weeks and have never gotten a response. The only phone number that they advertise is a generic off-site answering service, and there is no address for an office to go see them in person. Super shady. They posted an emergency maintenance number, but it always has a busy signal. A few days ago the keypad entry into the building was down and nobody could get in. 3 of us were outside waiting for over 20 minutes trying to find a number to call when another resident just happened to come down to walk his dog, so we got in. But if we had been stuck out there for a few more minutes we would have called the police. According to our online portal, we still owe $1500 in rent (which we do not, our rent check has already been cashed), but we can't get ahold of anyone to fix it. Really really nice apartment (slightly dated, but fantastic space and light), but we will not be staying because of the management.
