Mud Island
Perfect for Outdoor Enthusiasts
Residents rave about this secluded area of Memphis that offers plenty of outdoor space and waterfront views. Mud Island is a peninsula that parallels Uptown and Downtown, and is a one-of-a-kind cultural and recreational haven. A favorite part of this area is the Mud Island River Park which offers a scenic escape with its lush greenery, walking trails, and stunning views of the river. Its standout feature is the Riverwalk Model, a detailed representation of the lower Mississippi River that provides an educational and interactive experience for visitors of all ages.
Here, they also host outdoor concerts and events, making it a popular destination for music enthusiasts. It is a dog-lovers ideal neighborhood as well because of its access to various parks and outdoor space. It's a place where locals and tourists alike can enjoy the serenity of the river, learn about its historical significance, and embrace the vibrant culture that defines Memphis.
There are a handful of restaurants and boutique grocery stores on Mud Island, especially near the notable Harbor Town, but most residents look to take a short drive/walk to Downtown for access to more food options. If waterfront living is something you're interested in, there are plenty of apartment options on Mud Island.

Mud Island —
8.4/10 Rating
(based on 54 neighborhood reviews)
I like living on Mud Island and I generally feel safe during the day, especially compared to other areas. I love being walking distance from walking trails and being close to Harbor Town/Cordelia's/Tug's etc. to quickly grab food or other things I need.
One downfall is that there's not gas or grocery stores nearby (same goes for all of downtown). I don't feel safe at the Kroger on Union, so I usually go to West Memphis for groceries and gas, unless I happen to be in a safer suburb. Keep reading
Island Park
Love living on the island and plan to stay here! I'm someone who prefers to be able to walk out of my apt and go on a walk (vs having to drive to a park to get outside). I feel safe and love living by the river. 10/10 sunsets. Grocery stores are a little farther, but Cordelia's can save you in a pinch. Some new restaurants (tacos and an Italian place) and older Memphis classics (Paulette's, Tug's). There's also a pharmacy, gym, dry cleaner's. Power lines are underground (less likely to lose power than midtown during a snowstorm/ it'll be fixed faster). However, this past year we've lost power in regular rainstorms a couple times when nowhere else in Memphis has. Hasn't happened in a few months, though. Power in midtown can be slow to be fixed, so I'm not sure we really have it worse than other areas students live in. I would say the only way to (almost) guarantee that you won't lose power ever during the winter is to live in the Medical District near the hospitals.

Great for walking (Greenbelt along the river and in the neighborhoods), can get busy because lots of people come to picnic and play. Well kept dog park across the street as well as city recycling bins.

I love how many other students are on the island, the access to outdoor spaces, and the residential feel. I do wish there were more restaurants to walk to, but I would rather drive to a restaurant than give up all the things mud island provides.

I liked living here because it feels very safe and secluded from Memphis. The greenway on the river is great for walking/running. Cordelias is great. It is far from most grocery stores and restaurants but that hasn't bothered me. I feel like most of my friends live on Mud Island so it is great to be closet to everyone.

I loved being close to the greenway and downtown. It’s a relatively safe neighborhood but unfortunately crime did sometimes spill over. Mostly car break-ins, they tended to target trucks. Lots of mosquitos and bugs in the summer due to being close by the river. Lots of students there so it’s nice to be near friends, but not easily walkable to many amenities unless you live directly in Harbor Town. Overall not bad, but I would like to try living in another neighborhood next year.

I love how comfortable I feel on Mud Island. However, a few more quick service restaurants would really benefit the experience as I find it hard to get anything for dinner that I don't make myself.

I love the island! It’s a great place to live as a P1 as many other students live nearby. It’s a short distance from the school and generally pretty safe in the gated apartment complexes. It is a good 15 minute drive from affordable groceries and safe gas stations so keep that in mind before living on the island that you’ll have to venture a bit for shopping.

very safe and nice neighborhood. I enjoy walking my dog and looking at the house. right by the river with a nice greenway with tons of sun. Also some restaurants and grocery store which is convenient. less than 10 minute drive to law school even with decent levels of traffic. No public transportation but plenty of parking around. also a dog park on the island.

Mud Island is like a bubble. As safe as you are going to get in Memphis with almost all complexes gated and many houses for rent if someone would rather have a house.

Queit, pretty and secure. There's not many places in Memphis where I'd feel comfortable walking by myself, but Mud Island is the exception.

This is a very nice community and I love to walk on the greenway by the river. There are restaurants and a grocery store on the island but they are all expensive. I stay in the one apartment that is not gated so it is targeted a lot.

I enjoyed some parts of living on mud island. I enjoyed the park and living so close to a lot of my friends the first year. However, now that I live off the island it is so much easier to get places (grocery, school, friends places, any other stores, gas stations, etc.) and I don't feel so cut off from the rest of Memphis.

Nothing bad to talk about mud island it is one of the safest option to live in downtown memphis and most of your peers will most likely live out here too l. it’s awesome to be surrounded by other students like yourself and be able to walk safely along the island to get your exercise in

Mud Island is a good option for first-year students who are not familiar with Memphis. It is advertised as "safe", but there are still occasional shootings.
https://www.actionnews5.com/2023/05/14/mpd-investigates-shooting-near-harbor-town-square/ South Main/South Bluffs seems to feel like the quietest part of Memphis at the moment (where I live currently). Do not rent an apartment in Riverside just because it is cheap. There are lots of cars broken into there. Keep reading

A ton of students live here, especially during M1 year. I feel like almost all my friends are a short walk or drive down the island. I love being able to walk and run on the Greenway. I feel very safe here, even at night. Lots of apartments with pools, tennis courts, and sand volleyball, so if you like to spend a lot of time outside, Mud Island is a great choice!

I would definitely recommend Mud Island to any law student, assuming they aren't the type to roll out of bed and straight to class - you are going to have to drive and park in a garage if you live here. It's safer than most of Memphis, quiet and has lots of space for the outdoorsy and workout types

The location of Mud Island is fantastic. I can walk or ride my bike along the river if I want to get some exercise or go to Harbor Town (on Mud Island) if I need something like grocery's or a bite to eat. It is less than a 10 minute drive from my apartment that is tucked in the back to the law school. If I ride my bike, it normally takes about 15 minutes
