Midtown

Home to the Memphis Zoo & Much More
Located just east of Downtown Memphis, Midtown is a dynamic neighborhood with a mix of lively nightlife, great music, and the perfect combination of commercial and residential corridors. Known as the hub for Memphis’ art scene, Midtown is home to the Brooks Museum of Art, Playhouse on the Square Theater, and the Broad Avenue Arts District. Locals spend time at Lafayette’s Music Room where music pours out into Overton Square, Midtown Memphis’ best place to shop, eat, and enjoy the city.

Residents in this area love the outdoor space that Overland Park offers, and its proximity to endless activities. Visitors from all over also make their way to Midtown for the iconic Memphis Zoo. Despite being in the middle of it all, certain parts of the neighborhood offer a very residential feel. In these areas, you'll find apartment buildings, single-family homes, and schools.

Midtown — 8.3/10 Rating (based on 24 neighborhood reviews)
I love my neighborhood, lots of people of all different ages and always stuff going on. Definitely in the heart of Memphis, which means there might be more action/crime here than other places, but at the same time I know there are police/firefighters literally right around any corner. Definitely recommend some sort of gated parking, but I would recommend that to someone who lives in ANY part of Memphis.

I love the proximity to campus! Most people in Midtown go to the Kroger on Union, which is definitely the closest, but I think it is too busy and always out of sock, so I usually make a 20-ish minute trek to East Memphis. Plenty of dining options are nearby! I have always felt safe. Overton park is pretty close by when you need some outdoor time.

I liked living in my particular area. It's really close to campus with a lot of things to do, restaurants, and shops. Homelessness can be a bit of a problem, and safety has its ups and downs depending on what time you're out/where you are. There's next to no green space here though, so if you have a pet or like to run outside you should consider Mud Island or one of the neighborhoods out east, but overall I am planning on staying in the same area because of how convenient it is.

Very good neighborhood. No crime issues since I have been a resident with several individuals feeling comfortable parking their cars on the street. Also Overton Park is about a 5 minute walk and a 4 minute drive to midtown proper.

Very safe
Kroger is a madhouse, but safe and 5 minutes away. I walk to class or to the gym as they are both within 10 minutes away. Midtown is pretty nice.

Very nice area that is very convenient being super close to downtown and campus. A lot of restaurants and breweries are opening up in the area and it seems to be growing pretty quickly.

Couldn’t ask for a more convenient location- the commute to campus almost doesn’t deserve to be called a commute. 5 minutes with traffic- no joke.

Midtown is the most convenient place to live in Memphis as far as accessibility. You are close to campus, grocery stores, coffee, Overton Park, restaurants, and bars, all within a 5-10 minute drive tops. The housing there is also relatively affordable, although apartment prices are steadily rising (renting a house with multiple roommates is still super cheap in Midtown). The main negative of midtown is that it has a very block-by-block safety. One block can be very developed and safe to walk around, while 2 minutes of walking later, you can be in a very run-down, dangerous area. This makes walking around in Midtown a less realistic possibility, but driving places and avoiding the sketchier blocks is still easy enough.

Close to Rhodes, the Zoo, Overton park, and many amazing restaurants. I think this neighborhood is perfect for those who want to be close to downtown (10 minuets from Beale), but not have a city feel to their homes.

Midtown is conveniently located to campus and a lot of different parts of Memphis, but it is very dangerous. One block will be safe, then less than a 3 minute walk will put you in a very dangerous area. It is not somewhere you can go around walking in, even during the day in certain spots.

It is right across the street from the Central Gardens neighborhood, which is a safe place to take walks. It is also a short drive away from Cooper-Young, which is a great neighborhood for restaurants/bars/trivia/etc.
