Heartbeat of Memphis
Nestled along the Mississippi River, Downtown Memphis is a vibrant hub for business, entertainment, and history. A must visit Downtown spot for tourists and residents alike is Beale Street, where you can find bars playing legendary blues, mouthwatering Memphis BBQ, and plenty of shops. To dive into the city's history, visit one of the many museums honoring the "Birthplace of Blues and Rock-n-Roll" or the National Civil Rights museum.

As they leave Beale Street, many choose to visit the iconic pyramid that lies at the center of Memphis' skyline. This pyramid is not just a fun architectural sight as inside is the immersive Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid. Besides the multi-level retail store, the store also shares the pyramid with a small hotel with treehouse cabins, and many sprawling aquatic areas.

When it comes to living in Downtown there are many housing options available. The area is filled with apartment buildings, and for tourists, this neighborhood has plenty of hotel options. With plenty to offer from entertainment to housing, it is no wonder Downtown is considering the heartbeat of Memphis - always bustling!

I personally recommend living downtown during your M2 or M3 year, which is what I did. The main reason is that most students live on Mud Island or Midtown, and I lived in Crosstown (also great!). It was fun getting the experience of living closer to other students. And then after feeling more comfortable in the city knowing more people in the class, it is great to move downtown to a place like the Chisca. For real, my main piece of advice is to look only at apartments that have parking garages for safety (the Brewery is also a great place!).
South Main in particular has so many nice restaurants and coffee shops, so it's nice always having a place near home to study or hang out at. The walking path along the river is awesome.
General advice about being downtown is similar to other downtown cities you've been in– be careful walking late at night by yourself. I haven't had any issues with safety at all, but I also make sure to be aware of my surroundings!

The Chisca On Main
South Main is a wonderful family-safe area with tons of happenings and cool places to visit. I would highly recommend this area for the reason that you are close enough to downtown to make visiting quick but you are also a decent enough away to where it feels more like suburbia and in my opinion is safer. You also have less foot traffic which is nice in my opinion because driving through downtown sometimes can be a hassle but is never that way in South Main.

The Tennessee Brewery
As a law student, it is convenient to live right across the street from the campus. The surrounding community does not have major grocery stores such as Kroger. However, there are restaurants and convenient stores nearby. I recommend the usual safety precautions when walking alone in a downtown environment. Otherwise, I have not run into any troubles getting around during the daytime.

Metro 67
Metro 67 is in the heart of Downtown Memphis on the corner of Madison Avenue and Front Street. This is where law students will be going to school and spending much of their time. Lots of restaurants are conveniently nearby and I especially appreciate being a short walk from Walgreens and Starbucks.

There are many panhandlers and homeless people just outside the door which can be unsettling when new to downtown living. This area is not without crime. There are parts of midtown that feel safer, but having adjusted to the environment, I do not feel unsafe here.

It’s downtown, but not in the midst of all the action near Beale St. and the FedEx forum, which I personally enjoy. It’s not in a really noisy area and although there is some sketchy activity near by, it’s close to the police headquarters.

South Bluffs Apartments
I love living on Main St. It is walking distance from several restaurants and bars, Beale St, the Orpheum, the law school of course, and several coffee shops. For people who haven't been to Memphis, Main St is a pedestrian mall so there are a lot of unhoused people around the building. Do not let this scare you away. The unhoused people are generally very nice and you would be surprised at the relationships you could build with people if you get them something to eat and just sit and talk with them.

The neighborhood is relatively safe (there have been a few instances which is typical to Memphis but unnatural for downtown). There are many restaurants, bars, and events that occur downtown so there's always something to do. Many students live downtown so it is easy to meet up with friends. Since there are always people around, it is typically safe to walk around by yourself.

Great! It is fun to live in this area. There is a lot going on. Trolley Night is great. You can walk to everything.

I generally feel safe walking at night, but I wouldn't walk without my cellphone and pepper spray because there are some areas that are not well lit or heavily trafficked.
