Orlowitz Hall

I have enjoyed living at Orlowitz Hall over the first two years of medical school. It is conveniently located right in the middle of campus and Center City Philadelphia. Everything you could possibly need is within walking distance, including public transit (which can also get you to the airport). Management is very responsive to maintenance requests. I appreciate having 24/7 front door staff which makes entering the building secure and ensures delivery of mail/packages. The rent also includes water and the building is wire for Jefferson's WiFi network which students can access without needing to purchase additional internet (which is also available if one wanted). The RAs and office of housing and resident life put on nice social events as well which helps residents meet one another. You're also guaranteed to have fellow students living in either one of the Barringer or Orlowitz buildings which makes socializing very convenient. They also have a small gym in the building. There is also laundry/washer machines in the basement that you can pay to use.

As far as criticisms go, the main living rooms don't have any light fixtures so you have to provide your own lighting. The building has had an issue with the fire alarm going off randomly over the course of the two years I've been here, sometimes at incredibly inconvenient times, but it has seemed to stop over the last 6 months. Occasionally the water does have to be shut off due to some kind of unscheduled plumbing issue, but staff do a good job of informing residents and ensuring it is restored swiftly. You may see some cockroaches scurrying around the lower floors (especially the basement). Lastly, rent is perhaps slightly more expensive than what you may find around others parts of the city, but you're also getting the convenience of being on campus.

Average Apartment with Ideal Location

I had to deal with cockroaches for the first few months while living there. I had members from PMC come by to take a look several times but they were never able to figure it out and only laid down traps. I finally found out that the source of the infestation was from a leaking fridge. They quickly came to replace the fridge which ended the problem completely. For the next year and a half, everything was fine. Then I noticed some mice crawling thru the apartment but it wasn't as big of a deal as the roaches. All in all, I believe you can find a better apartment that doesn't have these issues. However, the location of Orlowitz was ideal and certainly helped with studying late at the library and being so close to everything on campus and getting to know other students in the same building. I would recommend for the first 1-2 years, but then venture out into another neighborhood.

Not great

I was moving for school from the west coast and didn't have the ability to find an apartment and knew this was associated with the school so figured it was a safe choice. After searching for an apartment, I see that I am paying too much for what I am getting. It has poor plumbing with regularly turning the water off for various maintenance problems. I have friends in the building who have had pipes burst. The maintenance is slow.

The apartment was great. Wish it had a dishwasher but otherwise was great. But rent was too expensive, the Internet was Jeffersons internet which isn't always reliable and they blocked video game consoles/chromecast/Apple TV, etc from connecting to the internet

Don't live here even if it looks convenient

Apartment hadn't appeared to have been cleaned when I came to move in. Mice were caught throughout the year in my apt and cockroaches in the basement where the gym and laundry were. Fire alarms were often on the fritz. Across the street from the hospital and the ER so get used to hearing the helicopter throughout the night.

Orlowitz

I liked being able to have packages sent to my apartment and have someone to pick them up. It was also very convenient to be in campus and have classes and the library so close by. It's also nice that there's a small gym in the basement and laundry facilities.

Cockroach hot box

We had cock roaches all year long. PMC would come to exterminate but clearly it did not work. The rooms are pretty small, appliances old, and there is almost no ceiling lighting. We had to bring in to many lamps to make it feel like we were not living in a cave. Through out the year we had to request for sink and drain issues several times. Needless to say, you can find a much nicer place for much less money.

Great on-campus

Helpful front desk. Large windows that open partially. Beautiful views of the city. Spacious closet. AC included! Library mere footsteps away. Heart of Center city. Small gym & laundry facilities locate in basement. Observed bugs in basement but never on higher floors.

I love this neighborhood! It's great for walking around, exploring the brick, tree-lined streets, and picking up a coffee or snack nearby. You are walking distance to dozens of bars and restaurants, including 13th St as well as South St. Within 20 minutes, you can walk to the quiet charming Queen Village neighborhood or the bustling Rittenhouse area and the shopping district. Even though it's close to Center City, you still get a calm, neighborhood feel.
Love South Street! Center City is accessible if you want it, but you're also pretty close to South Philly and the Italian Market.
Amazing neighborhood! Close to Center City and tons of bars and restaurants. A little far from campus - around 40 minute walk.
This is the ideal area to live if you're going to Jefferson. Anywhere in Washington Square West will put you around a 5 minute walk to campus. It's incredibly safe and I love that everyone around you is a Jefferson employee. There's tons of bars and restaurants in the area, all within walking distance.
The building is situated between Pennsylvania Hospital and Jefferson so it is a relatively safe and clean neighborhood. This does mean there are occasional ambulances or helicopters going by, but generally it isn’t too noisy. The subway and grocery stores (Acme or Whole Foods) are about half a mile away, but the walk is pleasant.
Midtown village is a wonderful neighborhood. There are many restaurants, shops, bars, lounges all within walking distance. Public transportation is abundant and always on time, too. People here are generally friendly and the streets don't get too crowded as it does closer to Center City West. Everything you need is in this neighborhood!
I really enjoy this area. It's very close to lots of bars and restaurants, but not noisy at all. I used to live in Rittenhouse which is extremely nice but very loud and I often was kept up at night by cars honking and construction. The area now is extremely quiet at night. It's very safe and I feel fine walking by myself at night. It is close to reading terminal plus the grocery stores on south street. I like the proximity to the park as well!
We love living in this neighborhood! It feels safe to walk in at night alone and we live two blocks from Independence Hall! With the new Fashion District under construction, it can get a little noisy at night with the construction.
