Summit Hills

Cheaper than D.C. Near the Red Line. Fairly far from campus. Downtown Silver Spring has some restaurants. Grocery stores nearby. Can be pet friendly. Relatively responsive maintenance. Safe area, day and night.

Great complex outside of the city!

This apartment is a great option for students who don't mind being a bit of a metro ride away from campus. My two bedroom apartment is huge, so it's a great space for roommates. The bedrooms are both pretty big, and the common areas have a lot of space too. The walls within our apartment seem to be good at blocking out noise, but my roommate has complained that she can hear our neighbors on the other side of her bedroom. The other residents of the complex are a mix of other students, young working professionals, and young families. We have a great pool, a gym, and other amenities like a small market and dry cleaners. Management is great as well--every building has a manager that's there from 9-5, and repairs are completed in a timely manner. The distance from school can be a bit of a hassle if you're someone who tends to run late, as the commute is about 45 minutes to an hour with walking time and the metro ride combined (although Uber/Lyft takes closer to 30 minutes). Silver Spring is a great area that has all the activity of DC...with better parking.

Get a car

If you have a car, it’s 20 min easy drive down Georgia ave straight to school

Lots of students live at Summit, so can car pool, metro also close

Good location with food and amenities in walking distance

Pet friendly, management friendly, 24h gatehouse, 24h gym, convenient store and dry cleaning on site

Technically maryland address but on border of dc, much cheaper apt for size relative to dc

Old but spacious

The buildings are relatively old but the apartments are very spacious. There are several buildings in the community and they all share the facilities which include tennis courts, a big swimming pool, a very large gym, mini golf course, dog park, and visitor parking (in addition to plenty of parking for people who live in the community). The silver spring metro station is only a 10-15 mins walk away. The only downside for me has been the carpeted apartments because of allergies. Otherwise I highly recommend this community.

Decent housing

Summit Hills is a great place to live for graduate students because the rent is decent for the area and includes all utilities. Parking is included as well as entrance to the gym.

The facilities are decent but not the newest depending on the building you are in. The property managers and staff are very helpful with making any changes and repairs that need to be made. Usually takes no more than 24 hrs for them to respond.

The entire property is located 10-15 minutes from downtown Silver Spring and easily accessible by bus and train. Property is a 15 minute walk to Silver Spring Metro stop.

There is a pool that is open between Memorial day and Labor Day and is always nicely maintained. The gym needs work and new equipment but has all the basics.

Super convenient

This place has been very convenient. Especially that HU grad students are preapproved and don’t have to pay a security deposit or application fee. That significantly helped for the transition to school.

It's Fine

It's fine. It is a little far away from downtown D.C. But you can walk to the metro. Once a month, they give out cupcakes.

Most affordable apartment with good location

Summit Hills is of course not a luxury apartment- it is not new and its external & internal decoration is somewhat below average.

But its price is much more affordable than any other apartments that are within 10 minutes' walk to Silver Spring Metro

Spacious for the money, but a tad outdated

We've lived in Summit Hills for a few months now and it has been a nice place to live. A good, safe community for everyone, including families. I have seen school buses pick up kids for school at the entrance to the apartment buildings. Unfortunately, laundry units are not in the apartment, but there are several machines in the basement of each building. Community is gated with a pool, dog parks, and mini golf. All utilities, gym membership, and lot and visitor parking are included. Garage parking is available though for a monthly fee. Gym is key access only, but open 24/7 with a variety of classes and equipment. Equipment is slightly outdated though. The apartment is mostly carpeted with a decent amount of storage. Also, it's pet friendly (both cats and dogs for a monthly pet rent) and about a 20 min walk to downtown Silver Spring and Metro.

Getting around Silver Spring

Silver Spring Reviews

66 reviews
Slower pace, smaller and safer than DC, but has all the same offerings. Ethnic restaurants, shopping, nightlife, nature trails, public transit, farmers market. Very diverse, aesthetically pleasing and walkable.
There is a ton to do in downtown Silver Spring. The Veterans plaza area has great restaurants and bars. The farmers market on Saturdays is huge, and my favorite part of the weekend. Lots of young couples, and families.
I lived in silver spring since undergrad and have no complaints. Front desk does good job of not letting random people into building. You need key fob to access most areas of building so feels very safe
There is a lot of green space, and the walk to the Metro station is really nice. It's quiet, which we really like.
Right in the heart of DTSS so a lot to do and a lot of great restaurants.
It's only a five minute walk to the red line metro stop in downtown Silver Spring (which is only three stops from campus). As someone who does not have a car, it is in an excellent location as everything is within walking distance (although the bigger grocery stores like Giant and WholeFoods are a bit of a farther walk- about a half mile). The apartment is right around the corner from one of Maryland's Federal District Courthouses and a wonderful brewery that offers a lot of fun and safe outdoor dining options due to COVID-19. There is also a farmer's market in downtown Silver Spring's center shopping area every Saturday morning. The noise levels aren't too bad as the apartment is on a side street rather than the main roads in the downtown area.
Pros: Across the street from a park and quiet neighborhood for children to play. The neighborhood is good for a quiet run. 7-11 across the street for quick snack and coffee runs. 5 minutes away from downtown for restaurants, shopping and movies. 5 minutes away from metro station. Grocery stores and mall within 10 minutes.
Cons: Traffic. elevated noise due to multiple high rises amplifying outside noise.
DT Silver Spring is very much a city. It's more diverse that DC neighborhoods tend to be, with people from everywhere, of all income and education levels and of all ages and life-stages. This makes for a pretty eclectic place. There are three grocery stores in walking distance (including a Wholefoods) and the Silver Spring metro and bus station (a hideous looking monstrosity) ensure you can get anywhere pretty easily. The train line can be pretty noisy when the freight trains come through, but you get used to it.
