Look for local landlords instead of big apartment complexes
Most fellow incoming students moved into what I call 'big box' apartments that have some amenities (pool, gym, parking lot), but no character, poor quality, and a terrible location. These places seem to prey on new transplants and students who have no idea which neighborhoods they'll actually love. I chose to use craiglist to find a small, local apartment building (8 units) that was built in the 1920s. I don't have the amenities of buildings like Post Briarcliff, but my location is 100x better, my apartment is must nicer (hardwood floors, historic details, big windows, huge porch), and I never have to deal with the hassle of a management company. Even better, I think my rent may actually be lower. My classmates who came over were always jealous of how close I was to all the bars, restaurants, and beltline and loved the apartment. Don't get stuck in a crappy 'big box' building - spend the extra 5 minutes and find a place you'll actually love!
