Riverhouse

Good value for the price & one of the more affordable options with roommates. Units are very landlord-dependent so would recommend trying to see it in person if possible. Lots of space and storage but not a lot of natural light. Really quiet and close to parks + easy to drive out of Ann Arbor.

Riverhouse Condos

The Riverhouse apartments are very hit or miss - some of them are newly renovated and super great while others are not renovated and have landlords that are a difficult to work with.

Riverhouse Condonminiums

Great! Landlord is fantastic - attentive and communicative. Only challenge has been the parking issue (does not appear to be enough parking given the number of residents). Solution: apply for parking quickly with the start of the new year so you and your roommate get a spot.

Riverhouse (White Coat are)

There are lots of things to consider when deciding where to live in medical school. Because of the pandemic, I am grateful to be in the White Coat area, which means I see my classmates on a more frequent basis due to the sheer number of us living here.

Things that I love about my apartment: hardwood floors, balcony, big sunny windows, open dining room/living room/entryway design, in-unit laundry (not all Riverhouse has this I think), big bedroom.

Things that could be better: kitchen size (pretty small), appliance/bathroom/kitchen update, more storage, would love a yard (but we have tons of grass/green space).

River House Condo Rental

Riverhouse condos fall just over the line onto the nice side of the "white coat neighborhood". They are hit or miss because they are privately owned and rented, therefore the amenities (dishwasher/washer/dryer) as well as the "niceness" of the apartment varies. Our individual unit has some problems with the heat and being too hot as well as some humidity problems. I assume this is unit to unit as I have not heard this in other units. Additionally, any unit maintenance is reliant on your owner for the most part. Additionally, payments can be electronic or in some cases by mail which is a hassle (owner dependent).

One parking spot comes with the apartment, another spot is a scramble (1-2 days) to see who can get the application in for an additional space as they always run out.

Pool is the nicer pool in white coat neighborhood and is pretty well kept up and nice to use during the warmer months.

12-15 min walk to the hospital.

New management (slowly) improving property

I've been living here since 2016 and think the place is a great deal, considering the price. I'm in a relatively unrenovated unit, but it's in mostly good condition.

The property manager (new as of 2018) isn't amazing, but they've been making steady improvements and have been handling maintenance at a reasonable rate. However, they only deal with issues outside your apartment - your individual condo owner deals with internal stuff, so be sure they're responsive before renting, as these buildings are pretty old.

Amenities = balcony/porch, outdoor pool, chip-card laundry (outdoor access), locked bike sheds, visitor parking. Some units come with covered parking spaces.

Really like it here

I really like the apartment that we are in. It is nice with hardwood floors. There is also a pool which is nice in the warmer months. These are condos so every landlord is different and every unit is slightly different. Noise isn't a problem. The complex is a mix between grad/medical students and older adults/retired people. I have had problems with Michigan Condominium Management. I have called when there have been problems on the weekend when they have people "on-call" and they are not helpful at all. They answered the phone calls and each time it seemed like it was a chore to answer the call.

Socially, if you have friends in the complex it is very convenient to walk over to their apartment, however it is an Uber away to any bars or social scene.

North Campus Reviews

North Campus is the place to be!! Lots of trails and nature for walking, NCRB gym nearby, grocery stores, gas, food, and more. Mostly graduate students up here so quieter but also within 10 min drive to downtown. There's always parking too.
I have lived in A2 for going on 14 years, it is sort of like having a friend, even when you are alone.

Me and a friend and her dog visit neighborhood parks.

That dog met the caged bald eagle at Leslie Science Center.. and twang!
To the end of his leash! The eagle looked at him like he was the most delicious thing he's seen all Winter. We just trudged thru the snow to view the cages, (both eagle and dog are ok)
Great quieter area very close to the hospital, and close to many other med students. It’s a more peaceful area that’s a tad farther from downtown, but for someone who likes a quieter space to study or nice spaces to walk and hang out with friends, white coat area is right by the river and Island Drive Park, and there are often med student social events held at White Coat Area because so many medical students choose to live here.
I personally really like North Campus, although it is farther away from downtown and the law school. There are several restaurants right near my apartment complex and the commute to school is very easy. I also find the lack of nightlife a plus, because it means the neighborhood is a lot quieter and safer than other areas of Ann Arbor.
Overall this area is great for walking to the medical school and hospital, living near other medical students, and especially having easier parking than in the central downtown/kerrytown areas. You also escape the rowdiness of undergrads by living here. The main reason I gave it a "7/very good" rating was because I don't like feeling isolated in location from central campus. Walking from White Coat to restaurants/bars downtown is at least 20-25 minutes, and often I decide not to go just because I don't want to walk there and back. After 6PM everyday parking is free downtown (free all day on Sunday), which is nice, except you don't always want to drive if you are going out to bars. It would be nice to have some type of casual coffee shop or restaurant in walkable distance to White Coat, but there is not. (edit: there is one breakfast-like cafe near White Coat, but it gets busy and is over-priced). There are some restaurants and coffee shops down the street on Plymouth road (not downtown) which is an easy 5 minute drive.
Multiple apartment/condo complexes within 10 minute walk of one another creating central location for many medical students of the University of Michigan. Park is 5 minute walk away. Lecture halls are 15 minutes door to hall. Hospital is 15-20 minutes from door to specific area of hospital. Never any safety issues. Parking can be strict and limited. Few stores and restaurants nearby.
This neighborhood is a 10 minute walk to the hospital which makes is very popular for medical students, residents, and even attendings. It is quiet, but it can be very busy in the morning and around 4pm when everyone is arriving/leaving their shifts. Grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants are a 5 min drive away near north campus.
Pros: beautiful - near the Huron River (5 min walk!) and trails and lots of trees. Very quiet. Residential area - maybe only 20% students vs. long-term residents where I am, though I'm close to the hospitals and med students, architects, and engineers all live up here. Very safe, and I see deer or even a raccoon once in a while. Grocery store is 1 mile away (Kroeger).

Cons: less social than I like in terms of proximity to Rossers. There is only one on my street that I know of.
