Affordable but hardly worth it

My roommate and I (both grad students at AU) have lived at the Washington Apartments since September 2021. Since then, we have encountered numerous problems with our apartment complex, ranging from roaches in our apartment to rats outside of it. The area also has a higher crime rate than previously anticipated, despite being centrally located to everything downtown DC (Shaw, U Street, Logan Circle) has to offer. In fact, the only positives of living here are the location and the affordability of this complex. Management is sometimes responsive but usually isn't. Overall, I would only recommend living here if you're willing to sacrifice comfort for cost-saving.

Cheap, but you can tell

It's fine. There's a gated grassy area for kids to play and dogs to exercise in which is nice. The management has tended to be pretty unresponsive to issues like ceiling leaks. They pretty much won't communicate with you via email. The buildings are old. Neighbors are nice. Parking is only $75 a month.

Trade-offs are worth it

This is a smaller, older apartment. It doesn't look nice from the outside. But in Covid times when amenities don't really matter because you can't use them, this is perfect. We are walking distance to anywhere we'd want to go, right next to the Metro and Capital Bikeshare, and saving lots of money while we do it. Management is responsive and helpful.

Great place to live

Location of the building is really convenient for a student, there are various grocery stores, restaurant and bars on 5-10 min walking distance. The only issue some people might feel is that it takes 25 min total time by metro to reach the GW law campus.

Love this place!

GREAT location if you like DC - close to parks, a great grocery store, and fun little bars and restaurants. Management is responsive and considerate, parking is $50 bucks a month, and you're right next to the metro. Only downside is package pickup is mostly working hours during the week, but they are open on saturdays too.

Washington Apartments

The Washington Apartments is an affordable complex in the newly popular Shaw neighborhood. The location is awesome, located right on the green/yellow line, .5 mile away from China town, tons of restaurants around, located right near the O St. Market They are not upscale apartments, but the inside is nicer than the outside of the building. New gym and resident center. The management isn't the best but I haven't had a terrible experience either, The neighborhood can be bit a sketchy at times but for the most part I feel safe.

You get what you pay for

The complex is located only a block from the Convention Center and Mt. Vernon Square metro station, but has little to no amenities. There are no balconies. The property is key-fob access gated, but gates are often broken or inoperable. I would recommend for single guys or students at Howard, which is just up the block on 7th Street.

Shaw Reviews

Easy walking to restaurants around 14th street and nice neighborhoods to take a stroll through.
Very vibrant part of town, with a lot of young professionals. There is a lot to do in the neighborhood from restaurants, bars, and even workout studios/gyms. There is so much within walking distance, and there are two metro stops also within walking distance. It is very convenient especially if you are a Howard student. You really couldn’t be in a better neighborhood than U Street corridor and the Shaw District.
The Shaw neighborhood has a lot of history and culture in it. They have done a ton of remodeling old buildings. Lots of restaurants and bars (especially outdoor areas for covid times) with a varied range of upscale/foodie restaurants to divey bars.
great so far. great location -- right by shaw metro station, giant grocery store, great restaurants & stores & nightlife. 5 minute walk to u street, and logan circle which is great.
The only thing we're missing are fast-casual restaurants less than 5 minutes walking distance away, but coming from New York, I know that's a high expectation.
Near 14th and U streets, which have lots of awesome bars, shops, and restaurants and a mile from the White House.
great place to live. so many bars and new restuarants popping up. also close to sooo many ethiopian restaurants which is awesome. great coffee, right next to the metro which is super convenient. close to everything really! takes less than 10 minutes to get the 14th st. only a few blocks to U street, and 15 min walk to columbia heights/dupont!
Great restaurants and bars. In the middle of nightlife and right by the school
