Avoid this complex

Hidden cost - you're required to use their internet package which is overpriced.

The package room is awful - packages are stolen or lost constantly.

Maintenance takes forever to come and something is always breaking.

I regret moving into this building.

Downtown location that doesn't break the bank

Great location at a very reasonable price. Lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance. Only a 7 min drive to campus. Property includes 9 different buildings, so management and maintenance are spread a bit thin.

Dirty building and apartment and tough management

My experience has been really bad with the apartment. Only pro is its location, which is really good. Besides that, here are my cons -
- Small apartment with dirty walls when I moved in, which even after paint are showing the original spots
- Corridor smells really bad
- Only way to request maintenance is through email. Going to the leasing office also won't help which is stupid
- Maintenance turnaround time is around 4 days!
- There is a common mailroom without a proper designated spot for packages, so you will have to go through ALL 200 packages to find yours. Good luck!
- Cockroaches in building and apartment
- To trash cardboard boxes, you need to go to very end of parking lot to find nearest dumpster

West Village

The apartments are cool-looking and in a great location, but the place is expensive and the maintenance of common spaces isn't great. Visit your apartment before you sign a lease. We had to move apartments because the first one we were in smelled very dank.

New Building in West Village

Horrible. Everything is an extra fee; for trash alone, I am paying $150, cable is another $50 a month and there is a huge pest problem.

I do not recommend moving into this complex.

General Review

Management team is great. They are very helpful and responsive. The houses are wide and have all the utilities you need varying from dishwashers to gym. It is located in Downtown so very safe neighborhood and very close to many great restaurants and bars. Only con is unless you have some sort of a vehicle, car/bicycle/moped, transportation is hard.

Issues

Very thin walls, you literally can hear your neighbors. Also, as soon as you turn any water source l, you will smell the bad sewer smell. Very overrated apartment complex with unreasonable rent.

Brightleaf Reviews

Very safe neighborhood, I have never felt unsafe here and have been comfortably walking alone even at night. Streets have good lighting. Very close to bars and restaurants.
Brightleaf is essentially the (very small) area between downtown and Duke's East Campus. It's fairly walkable, has a few good restaraunts, and is about as central in Durham as one can get. It's not the most scenic neighborhood, but if you want to run or walk, you're very close the ATT, or the leafier neighborhoods of Trinity Park.
Love the neighbourhood, very lively filled with the newest restaurants and bars
Really love the brightleaf area. Lots of restaurants and bars. New spots popping up! Very close to downtown.
Love it - Durham is growing very fast and it's nice to be close to it!
Brightleaf tends to be pretty quiet; It is almost entirely made up of West Village. It's walkable to good dining options and is central to Durham as a whole. Not a lot of "neighborliness" however. Most people seem to be working professionals with a few young families.
Fantastic neighborhood - fun to live down town. Very walkable to all bars and restaurants. Close enough to Ninth Street.
Downtown is a very social place with a lot of bars and restaurants. A lot of graduate students live in this complex and the complex is very secure with access cards requirement in every building.
