The Museum District

Rich in Art
The Museum District is a neighborhood that resides in The Fan, known also as “Upper Fan”. The neighborhood is the home to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Right outside of town lies the Science Museum of Virginia, The Branch Museum of Architecture and Design, and Children's Museum of Richmond. The Museum District is a short commute to Virginia Commonwealth University, making it a popular place for many students and young adults to live. Whenever the locals need to get some grocery shopping done, many of them recommend going to the Kroger grocery store that is right outside of the neighborhood.

The Museum District has plenty of places to get some food or drinks that are right outside of town. Many of these places are highly rated and recommended by the locals that live there. Highly rated restaurants in the area include Stella's, Akida Japanese Restaurant, Mellow Mushroom, Supper, East Coast Provisions, and Ginger Thai Taste. Bars that are great for a drink with friends and hanging out include The Cask Cafe, Emilio's, The Circuit Arcade Bar, and Gus' Bar & Grill. The Museum District is a hopping place within The Fan.

The Museum District — 9.1/10 Rating (based on 29 neighborhood reviews)
There are restaurants, bars, and museums within walking distance in every direction. Carytown is just a short jaunt away. Of particular note is Black Hand Coffee, the best coffee shop in midtown Richmond, which is basically located in the lot behind the building where I live. I wouldn't live anywhere else in the city.

The neighborhood is fantastic. The museum district is a beautiful place to live. I feel very safe, even when I walk my dog at night. There is plenty of off-street parking if you choose not to purchase the parking pass. The only time I have not been able to find a spot is on Friday evenings when the VMFA happy hour is going on.

Boulevard is the dividing line between the Fan and the Museum District. I live on that corner so can hear the gunshots emanating from the Fan. There is a problem around the area with people breaking into cars and beggars on almost every corner. Carytown is just a few blocks away so is an easy walk. The gentrification of the neighborhood is starting to slide the other way meaning people begging for money and shady types hanging around. While not a bad area one just has to remain vigilant.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience in the Museum District. I feel safe here, and the other residents of the neighborhood are friendly. It's a great location in that it's so close to Carytown and the Fan District. It's a great neighborhood to go on runs and walks through the neighborhood.

The VFMA is a wonderful museum located near by. Cary street and Carytown isn't too far away with some great restaurants. A couple grocery stores are in walking distance. The neighborhood consists mainly of families and is very safe.

I live in the Museum District but on the north side so I feel like I live in a neighborhood, not an apartment which is great. I'm 1 block from the VMFA and the social scene is spectacular. The location couldn't be better!

Really enjoy how the neighborhood is close to the Fan/Carytown/Scott's Edition. Also enjoy how it is a more residential feel, yet still very close to everything I want to do in the city.

I love the museum district. It's the perfect mix of neighborhood feel and social scene. Very picturesque, and much more quiet than the Fan, with almost the same walkability.

A great location between Scott's Addition and Carytown, the Museum District is that great mix between right where you want to be and still quiet enough. The greenery of the neighborhood is quite beautiful making it great to walk/run around, despite the sidewalks being uneven at points. Street parking is much easier to find here than in the Fan, though you may still encounter porch pirates if you live on a main road.

The best place to live. Everything you need is within walking distance. I don't feel uncomfortable walking at night. This neighborhood mostly consists of working young adults and young families. This area is an escape from the tall buildings of downtown, but urban enough so that you still feel like you are in the city.

I LOVE the Museum District. It’s convenient to Carytown the Fan, and Scott’s Addition, but it avoids the sketchiness and business of those neighborhoods on the weekends. It’s the perfect balance between social and quiet. The Museum District is perfect for grad students who like to run through scenic streets or walk to the VMFA for happy hour. Everyone is very friendly. Lots of grocery options near here: you could walk to Kroger, The Fresh Market, Elwood Thompson’s, etc. Convenient to the highway as well.

I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. I have always felt safe, and there are so many nice places to walk around when the weather is nice. You will always see many friendly faces out walking or running in the neighborhood, especially on nice days. Cary Street and the VMFA are in close walking distance, including a ton of great bars and restaurants there and in between. The on and off ramp to 195 is literally around the corner, so the apartment is easy to find for out of town guests and any trip requiring getting on the highway (either 64 or I-95) is quick and convenient. Parking is easy to come by and free in this area. There are three, soon to be four, grocery stores within walking distance or very close driving distance, representing a range of price points and lifestyles/cultures from the affordable Kroger to the Ellwood Thompson local market. While being in the city of Richmond and super close to everything in the Museum District, the Fan, and Scott's Addition, the University of Richmond campus is still only ten minutes away, and there's hardly ever any real traffic.
