Hot Spot for Duke Students
Just northeast of Duke University, Old West Durham offers a great living option for any current student looking to make the commute to their classes. Just outside of town lies Sarah P. Duke Gardens, a public garden with a walking path and ponds offering great nature life. The locals of Old West Durham love to go there in their free time, especially when the weather is nice. For those who cook frequently, there is a large Whole Foods and Harris Teeter downtown. Old West Durham has plenty of highly-rated restaurants in the area that locals indulge at. These include Parizade, ZenFish, Cosmic Cantina, Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar, and Vin Rouge.

Old West Durham has a vibrant bar scene. Bars recommended by the locals include Bull Durham Bar, The Tavern, Federal, Arcana Bar and Lounge, and Pinhook. Old West Durham is a great place to live if you are looking to be close to Duke University while also having plenty of destinations in the area to live.

9th Street is a fun, social area for Duke MBA students. It's where a lot of them live, and all of us go out, so it's fun to be in such a social area where all friends are just a short walk away (sometimes not even outside the building!). There are great nice and fast-casual restaurants around too. It's not the cutest neighborhood, but I found it more valuable to be where my future classmates would be living.

Fantastic neighborhood - highly recommend for international students at Duke especially those who do not have their own vehicles. Major grocery stores are within walking distance, with lots of casual dining options in between. Also, Duke's East Campus and Brodie gym are mere minutes away.

I really enjoy this area! There are good restaurants, bars, and stores on Ninth Street. We are walking distance from a Harris Teeter and Duke's East Campus. Lots of people in this area have dogs and I love seeing them walking around. We're also very close to Berkshire 9 and Berkshire Main which are two other apartment buildings. I appreciate this because there are other students nearby to me!

Neighborhood feels really safe. I lived in 4 places in Durham, to the south of Duke, to the west of Duke, to the North of Duke and Ninth Street. By far the best neighborhood that I lived in is Ninth Street. There are lot's of bars and restaurants at the Walking distance. Also, two grocery stores that offer lot's of whole food choices (Whole Foods, Harris Teeter). Also, Duke Vans go there at night, which is the best when you stay late at school.

Tiny "neighborhood" (does this one street even count as a neighborhood?) but has several key institutions, like supermarket, 5-7 nicer restaurants, 2 bars (both dive-y), a Duke store, a Pure Barre, several cute coffee shops, and random hipster shops. Short walk to Whole Foods, Cocoa Cinnamon, and Duke's East Campus (and Brodie Gym).

Ninth Street neighborhood is great for young adults, including those with spouses/significant others, who want convenient access to restaurants, bars, and a grocery store. It is only a short drive/walk from Duke's campus and downtown Durham. If traveling to Fuqua School of Business, best to drive or catch a ride as the walk is 40+ minutes.

This is where the majority of Fuqua students live. If you don’t live here you will still probably come here pretty frequently for social events. It’s waking difference from Tavern and Dain’s which are two bars that Fuqua students frequently go to.

The Ninth Street area is probably the best part of Durham. But it's still lacking if you come from a city like Boston, Chicago, New York. It has a cool vibe and hipster aesthetic (without the pretentiousness or prices) but veers a little bit toward the grungy side.

Also a note on this area, I believe it's very safe compared to the city I come from (Northeast), but you still need to be a sensible person, especially at night. There is crime around here like all metropolitan areas, so just don't be stupid.

Bus schedule depends on the day and time you're trying to get to campus, so its variable.

Bus is 6 minute ride to DMP, then ~5-8 minute walk to the engineering quad from there.

To be safe, I take try to leave 30 minutes before I need to be on campus. No bus on weekends, but you can get a free parking pass for the weekends.

Ninth street itself is basically food options, a good midpoint between downtown and campus

Tons to do around 9th street. Harris Teeter is walking distance, which makes grocery shopping very convenient. The area is pretty heavily trafficked throughout the day, but is never too loud at night. The neighborhood is right across from West Campus, but is around a 5 minute drive from the side of campus with the Law School and Fuqua.

Convenient location to other students -- it's easiest to catch rides to and from campus from 9th street. There is not good public transportation in Durham, so convenient location to other students and campus is key if you don't have a car. If you don't have a car, I highly encourage you to choose an apartment on 9th street.

The 9th street area has grown rapidly in the last few years. There are multiple great restaurants in the area, including Monuts Donuts, Mad Hatters, Happy & Hale, Juju, Burger Bach, and the new Saint & Co. There are two nice grocery stores (Harris Teeter and Whole Foods) within walking distance. I can walk to several coffee shops (notably Joe Van Gogh and Cocoa Cinnamon). I often go on runs or walks around the East Campus loop, which is just two blocks over from 9th street.

The 9th Street corridor is really pretty great. You are within walking distance of everything you'd need from a barber and a bank to beer and books. It is probably 5-10% more expensive (between Harris Teeter, apartment, and other shops markup) than other areas of Durham, however it is a great community if you're single and want to socialize.

The Ninth Street area is a hub of activity. There is a brand new Harris Teeter that anchors a shopping center that includes fast casual restaurants (like Panera) and fancier restaurants (like Juju) along with Pure Barre, SportsClips, and other restaurants and bars. There is also a Whole Foods within walking distance or a quick drive away.

It's also within walking distance of East Campus (including Brodie Gym and the East Campus wall running route) and "The Tavern" which is the primary Tuesday night scene for Fuqua students.

The area is fairly safe and patrolled frequently by Durham Police and Duke Police.

It's right behind harris teeter (a huge plus to have a 24 hour grocery store right in front of your apartment complex). The neighborhood does tend to get quiet pretty early - the only walking distance things open late are Tavern, heavenly buffaloes, cosmic cantina, and waffle house, but the neighborhood is very safe and has lots of cute stuff for the daytime!

I love living near 9th St. and the shops on Hillsborough, and I am also within walking distance to Harris Teeter. If I hit all the green lights, it is also only a 5 minute drive to the law school. Overall, the neighborhood is fantastic, with multiple bars, unique shopping, and also close to Duke's East Campus if you need an emergency way to get to campus/the law school. Additionally, Duke's H bus picks up directly at the apartment - while that won't get you to the law school, that could take you close to campus for yet another backup way to get to school. The apartment itself is a little secluded, which is the reason for an 8 - there has been a little crime nearby so I don't feel 100% safe walking at night alone.
