Erwin - LaSalle

Quiet and Convenient for Duke Students
This area includes Erwin Road, LaSalle Street and Morreene Rd, which run just north of Duke's campus. The area has some popular amenity apartment buildings like The Belmont, Lofts at Lakeview, and The Heights, which offer quieter alternatives to the more-social apartments like Station Nine.If you like to go out, prepare for plenty of rides to Ninth Street and Downtown as they host the main strip of bars.

Renters here enjoy the area for its convenience to Duke and generally quiet scene. It's very nice living with a few nearby restaurants/amenities, but you'll have to venture elsewhere if you want to find the traditionally popular spots.

Close to Fuqua, but there's nothing nearby. No shops, restaurants or grocery stores that are walking distance; (Everything is a short drive away, however) so it makes the area overall feel pretty dead/empty. If you want to be somewhere lively but that's still close, I'd recommend 9th street instead...: Dozens of cute restaurants, shops, and anything you need just a few steps away from your door.

Campus Walk is well located both in terms of proximity to both the campus and basic amenities. However, after 6 pm at nights, the neighbourhood gets very lonely which makes it all the more unsafe to venture.
Recently there have been many break-ins in and around apartments in the neighbourhood, although no one was harmed.

Next door to plaza with Chipotle, TGIF, UPS, and several other restaurants. Very short walk to another plaza with more restaurants and a wine/cider bar. 20-minute walk to class or to the hospital or to just about any other University amenity. Quiet! Bus stop very close by (though I've never used it). Occasional homeless beggars in plaza next door. Not a big Fuqua social scene here, though (but you can always change that!). A professor told my mother that this is the only neighborhood he would want his daughter to live in had she gone to Duke (for safety reasons primarily).

The Belmont is one of the nicer properties in the area. I didn't think the places across the street were as good. They are probably about 30% Duke people and the rest are regular Durham residents. If you go further down LaSalle, it is less safe. The apt complex next to the Belmont is a bit sketchy.

The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.

Campus Walk has Belmont and Lofts close by which have a park and pool, so it's a pretty walk down the lane. The Millenium hotel is also close-by so that's a plus. There is also a set of eateries and a spa down the lane.

But the thing that makes Campus Walk ideal for me is proximity to the bus stop and the campus. There is not many non-students here, so when all the students know and interact with each other, it feels nice.

I haven't heard of too many mugging or break-in incidents yet, so it's a relatively safe neighbourhood.

The complex that the Belmont is in is very nice. There are speed bumps for safety, plenty of parking, and the fact that it is gated makes me feel extra secure. The only thing that I don't like about the surrounding area is that people cross the busy street all of the time, and at all hours of the day in order to get to the bus. During the day isn't as big of a problem, but there are no crosswalks and at night it is very hard to see people in the street since it is curvy and poorly lit.

The neighborhood feels very safe. When I first moved in, management sent out a note that two cars had been stolen from the garage, which seemed concerning but I heard that the cars had been left unlocked or something to that effect. I myself have woken up at night due to clearly audible shots fired (maybe 1mile away) and once reported a shooting after coming home late around 3AM which turned out to have happened at Duke Manor.
Intrusion may happen, therefore keep the doors locked.
Also, I would try to avoid a 1st floor apartment with direct access through the patio.
