Garrett Road — 7.5/10 Rating (based on 42 neighborhood reviews)
Nice and quiet, lots of close by nature and parks.
More stores and places to go than 9th street area, but highly car dependent.
Ok for riding bikes, but not ideal for walking around.

The location is right of US Highway 15 501. There are numerous shopping options located off of this road. The location also provides easy access to both Durham and Chapel Hill as well as Interstate 40. Also, the trails of Duke Forest are located just west of the property. All of these are positives. The negatives would be that a car is basically required to get anywhere.

The neighborhood has everything that I need. There are a few restaurants and a supermarket nearby. There are not a lot of things to do in the area compared to other parts of Durham.

This is a very nice neighborhood,. There are many stores close by (driving distance), grocery store, gas station, restaurants, home depot, bed bath and beyond, target, etc., that make it convenient.

There are also 3 schools nearby, less than 5 minutes drive.

There are pros and cons: the neighborhood is not gated, and we have had some people experiencing their cars being rifled in (I don’t keep any valuables in my car and have not experienced this). I love the proximity of our place to Target and Trader Joe’s. You definitely need a car to get around if you live at Garrett West, but everything is a very short drive away.

The "neighborhood" is just the apartment complex - once you leave Garrett West you are on busy roads. But Garrett West itself has nice green space, a dog park, a playground, a pool, and a walking trail that are all very nice.

I have not been through the neighborhood very much, but from what I have seen, the residential side of Garrett Road (west of the Garrett Road / Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd intersection) is quiet and safe. The other side of the intersection however - and even the strip mall on the corner across from the Toyota dealership - is a bit rougher and more commercial of an area.

The neighborhood is not glamorous nor walkable. If that's what you're looking for, definitely go for something on 9th Street. But if you're looking for a safe community, with convenient access to grocery stores and restaurants, and a quick commute to school, Garrett West is a good option. It's definitely necessary to have a car to live here, because there are not a lot of Fuqua students with whom you can coordinate rides and there are no reliable public transport options. If you do own a car, the commute is 7 minutes (less than 9th Street).

There's a Sam's and Super Target and Harris Teeter within 5min. Trader Joe's is 10-15min down 15-501, and the med school is about 10-12min away as well. More suburban with a running trail within a 2min run.
