U Street Corridor
Bustling Part of DC that Never Sleeps
U Street Corridor is a very vibrant neighborhood with countless restaurants and ethnic food, lively bars, and fabulous shopping options. Nightlife is a major plus with popular establishments like JoJo's, Solly's or Florida Avenue Grill. Its vintage fashion collections and popular jazz clubs introduce historical culture to local residents.
Reviewers mention that you won't find a busier spot in DC, and if being in the thick of it all sounds ideal, than this is the neighborhood for you.

U Street Corridor —
9.1/10 Rating
(based on 25 neighborhood reviews)
Very vibrant part of town, with a lot of young professionals. There is a lot to do in the neighborhood from restaurants, bars, and even workout studios/gyms. There is so much within walking distance, and there are two metro stops also within walking distance. It is very convenient especially if you are a Howard student. You really couldn’t be in a better neighborhood than U Street corridor and the Shaw District.

Love Shaw, feels like a neighborhood but with plenty of fun things to do & very close to everything you would need. Access to public transit while not too far from VA or GW.

Love the restaurants on 14th and the availability of bars in my neighborhood, however the U st bars have creepier people than the bars in other parts of the city. Also my phone was stolen at Tropicalia. Don't go there.

Neighborhood right off of U Street and 14th, so very quiet but close to bars and restaurants.

Parking in this neighborhood is so aggressive. It's a strain on the focus of students to worry about the condition of one's vehicle.

The immediate surrounding neighborhood is brand new and lively. The Shaw/ U Street Neighborhood in general can still be a bit gritty, like many parts of the city, but it’s undergoing lots of new construction, with new restaurants and retail stores popping up. Overall, I’ve felt very safe living here in the city and in my complex.

Your right in the middle of U street between 13 and 14 NW. One of the beset locations in DC. Bars and restaurants right outside the door for several blocks. Metro stop and Rite-Aid store right across the street. Only down side is can be noisy on weekend nights, which I didnt mind.

The Ellington
The Ellington is located 3 blocks from the local police station, making the neighborhood feel very safe. As there are many bars, restaurants, and music venues in the area, it can become noise on the weekends.

Very busy on the weekends but lots of things to do and places to eat. It can get noisy, but it's nice to have a Trader Joes at the heart of it all.

Pros: Trader Joes (3 minute walk), Wholefoods (10 minute walk), Target (15 minute walk) nearby, social with numerous bars within 5 minute walking distance, young, safe (I never feel unsafe walking alone because the streets are well lit and people are always out), very metro accessible.
Cons: Expensive (rent, food, everything), sometimes crowded (bars are often too crowded on Friday and Saturday night. Keep reading

The neighborhood can be a little noisy and it is not always safe so keep that in mind. I would travel in groups if possible.

Lots of good restaurants and parks within walking distance. It's nice to have a bit of distance from Foggy Bottom once you're done with school. It's a high traffic area, since U and 14th are both major streets.

There are not many grocery stores nearby, but there is a great Chinese Restaurant down the street. The neighborhood is probably one of the safest places in DC.

There are a bunch of restaurants and bars in the area, so that is a major plus. The area is also right next to Meridian Hill Park, so you have easy access to a lot of outdoor space. Depending on the exact location of the building, there can be a lot of noise, but the area is overall safe.

Although, noisy, the U street corridor is by far the only place I'd want to live in DC. Yes, the area is in serious need of some parking garages but between the convenience and amazing nightlife this area has it all.
