Good apartment, close but not too close to Duke

I've enjoyed living at the Flats at 55Twelve. It's close to a main shopping center and major thoroughfares in Durham but not busy or noisy. The floor plans are spacious with large bedrooms. Maintenance has always been responsive. It has a gym and pool on site and a package room.

Location-wise it's about a fifteen minute drive to Duke. It's about twenty-five minutes to downtown Durham. So you can't walk to either, but it's not overly far from either.

My main complaint would be that I've dealt with numerous spiders and other bugs in the apartment.

Convenient

Convenience and quiet are the biggest selling factors - about 12 minutes to both Duke and UNC and there is a variety of residents from students to retired individuals. It is very close to many restaurants, grocery stores, and places needed to run errands. The gym is tiny compared to other apartments I've lived in and often crowded when I go and unfortunately there is not another gym close by. Office staff is very friendly.

Good location, older but decent apartments, but terrible management

I lived here for years and loved it, but recently the management changed to Greystar. They are terrible and we had so many problems with communication, incorrect water bills, and rent/deposit issues. The general manager is rude and unresponsive. Stay away!

Terrible Management

Started living here when it was owned privately by Evergreens. Decided to stay many years because the people and managers who worked the properties were amazing. In one year, switched management two times after being sold and we had billing problem after water problem after no response from manager problem.

At the end of the day the head manager ruined our experience.

Quiet, more family-oriented complex, very convenient location

The Flats at 5512 has been a great place to live for roommates who split the distance between Durham and Chapel Hill as graduate student at either Duke or UNC. The location of the complex at the intersection of 15-501 and I-40 is pretty hard to beat. It's an easy 10 minute drive to Fuqua and about a 15 minute drive to the medical school/hospital at UNC. There are a bunch of chain restaurants, Kroger/Walmart/Target/Trader Joe's/Whole Foods, all nearby within a 2-10 minute drive. The apartments are spacious. We're in a 3 bed/2 bathroom unit with a balcony and additional storage unit next to our apartment, and the rent we pay is a steal (about $400 per person)! Granted the amenities could use some updating but overall things aren't bad. The management company is pretty good but nothing stellar. The complex feels pretty safe and we often see kids running around playing and people walking their dogs. We do live close to a shooting range, so sometimes on nice weekends we'll hear gunshots, but it's been only a handful of times. I definitely recommend this place for roommates or couples who need to go to Duke and UNC!

It's very quiet: mostly graduate students and some families. Very convenient for getting to McColl. It is tucked away in the corner of campus so if you want to walk anywhere, it takes about a mile to get into campus. I would recommend having a car for this neighborhood since there are no grocery stores within walking distance.
Love being right on Franklin street. Walking distance to football games and tailgates as well as restaurants and bars on Franklin.
Lots of food options around the building. I regularly walk my dog in the area around the apartment.
The neighborhood is mostly for other UNC students.
Carrboro is really cool, if slightly offbeat place to be. Weaver St Market and a bevy of other restaurants/smaller places make it a good food hub. For things going on, there are things like the Carrboro Arts Fest, weekly "Carrboro Street Markets" with lots of vendors, and a flurry of other community-oriented activities.

Have enjoyed my time there.
Lots of stores, gym in neighborhood, church, groceries--basically a little town. Con is that it almost feels a bit "Pleasantville." That said, the Walmart up the road (<2 min) is wonderful as is Fig & Honey and the huge Harris Teeter (<5 min away) in Chatham county. Families and children amidst Med School students and retirees. Great feeling, awesome convenience to UNC and downtown CH. Highly recommend.
Neighborhood feels super safe. Little kids will like the playground on-site. Lots of friends for them to play with. Elementary school (Glenwood) is awesome, if not old. Plenty of community events to meet people and for kids to play. I like it here, and recommend it to most people.
The neighborhood is very convenient for business grad students, however, it is far from everything else. You need to get a car for everything, except going to school. It still compensates, given that uber is cheap in the region and the convenience to go to school is amazing.
