Paseo Studios

The housing is conveniently located, there's a shuttle to campus, and utilities are included. The rooms are well soundproofed, furnished, and the appliances are good. The front desk is available 24 hours a day. The only big issue that I have is that it's so expensive.

Under Market Price for the Surrounding Area, Great Student Housing

Small, but reliable with all utilities covered. Can’t adjust the air conditioning temperature, which is a bit odd. Wifi is inconsistent, often not strong enough for remote classes. Maintenance is a bit slow for non-emergencies. Shuttle access is a lifesaver.

Life at Weyburn Terrace Paseo - ups and downs

The apartment in Paseo is actually quite good. It has a full kitchen a decent full size bed. A desk and a book shelf. The love seat is not comfortable as you can not lie down, you wont fit. It is just a matter of luck what room you get. My room is on the ground floor and is not getting enough sun. There are no ceiling lights in this country so I am using 3 standing lamps so brighten the space. If you are lucky enough to get a room on higher levels with bigger windows, than you should be fine.
The management did not do a good job cleaning the apartment, when I moved in, it was still dirty. Had to do some serious cleaning.
Also, the fan in the room is messed up. Have not been able to figure out how to just turn it off, I am informed that you actually can not turn it off. Sometimes the room gets too hot sometimes it gets too cold. That is just annoying.
Having said that, it is super close to campus. Prior to moving here, I spent to much time on the bus and sometimes in the car. Most of your friends will probably be living in Westwood so it is very convenient to be here and so close to campus.
Bear in mind that these studios are expensive. You can get a room and a bathroom in a shared apartment with approximately 200 cheaper that these studios.

Solid Apartment; No Serious Problems

It's small-ish, but it does its job. I'm just glad to have my own space. Lock is electronic. It ran out of battery once and locked me out. Garbage disposal requires a little help now and then, but nothing hard to fix.

Review

Overall, I am pleased with my experience at Paseo. The maintenance crew in particular is friendly, respectful, and responsive. The point deduction is the result of a few particular issues that I have had (and understand many of my neighbors have had as well).

First, the parking permit process is a nightmare. The information I was given prior to move in was inaccurate. It took me 12 days (each of which I had to pay for parking in an off-property garage) to secure my permit. I was moved back and forth between University Apartments North and the UCLA Parking Services, each of which told me the other would be the one to assist me. Calls went unreturned, and finally after showing up to the UCLA Parking Services office in person and insisting that this matter be resolved before I left, I was able to have the issue with the website fixed. UAN seemed uninformed of the entire process. Albeit, this was a new process for Fall of 2019. Hopefully it has been improved upon.

My greatest issue is the air quality inside of my apartment. For some reason, I have a serious issue with dust. I clean (dusk, vacuum, and sweep) twice a week. Each time, there would be an unnatural amount of dust and other particulate matter (dirt, etc.) in my apartment. I never open the windows. Maintenance has changed my air filters twice and cleaned the air ducts in my unit (maintenance is great). Still, the problem persisted. Dust covered everything, including my bedding. After a semester of feeling unwell (I am allergic to dust), I invested in a rather expensive air purifying system, which seems to be helping. I am not sure if this problem is unique to my unit and/or the result of the on-going construction across the street, but it is an issue that students should not have to burden themselves with resolving as I have.

The thermostats in the units are ornamental. They literally do not work. I understand this is true in the other units as well.

Westwood Reviews

Westwood is great. Can take the Bruin Bus to get to campus easily so no need to pay for parking on campus. Westwood village is an easy walk with many great shops and restaurants. Westwood park is around the corner which offers all kinds of outdoor activities. Really enjoy living in this quiet, safe neighborhood.
Great college area, a little depressed because of COVID, but has a lot of potential and feels very accessible. Close to other nice areas like Brentwood or Santa Monica
Expensive, quiet depending on how close you are to undergraduate apartment buildings and the medical center.
The walk to Westwood is kind of long, I usually drive.
Westwood is a great area for graduate and professional students who are not from LA. It is walkable (grocery, pharmacy, restaurants, etc.), which is nice. Campus is close by, and a bus service runs from Weyburn directly to campus.

There is a large amount of homeless activity in the area.

It is a very young neighborhood. A lot of undergrads in the streets.
I'm not a city person, so it feels like there's nothing to do. I don't like bars or clubs, and I can't afford to eat out. Movies are pretty expensive, too. I would love more green space to sit and get away from the noisy 405. But there is a grocery store nearby, and there are a fair number of restaurants and movie theaters. There should be plenty to do for city people. Westwood feels like your typical college town, and it's full of students.
Lots of dining and grocery options at all price points. Very happy to have Ralph's and Target within walking distance (along with upscale groceries if that's your thing). 30 min to LAX or Santa Monica by car (if traffic is cooperative). Easy access to the 405. Lots of Uber cars around to take you where you need to go. Some quiet neighborhoods around campus that are good for running.

Some homeless people but overall feels quite safe. Only problem is that (surprise) it's definitely not cheap to live here.
Westwood is full of UCLA students. Everyone is friendly and there is a shopping center within walking distance of the apartment. Our apartment building is also filled with a lot of nurses or retired couples which is nice. We also have many foreign exchange students living here.
