Great building, poor management.

Love the building, but the property management company has communication problems and tried to increase our rent before listing our unit at a price less than what we pay once we gave notice. Its a big company and they don't care about individual residents, but the property itself is nice.

Convenient and Comfy in VA

The metro is across the street through the Gateway Marriott. Getting to law school takes about 30 minutes on the blue line, including walking. Only issue is it's hard to go between school and home, so, if you need a suit, I just wear mine to school for the day.

Costco is around the corner, which is good for things you need in bulk, and Pentagon City is a ten minute walk. Harris Teeter is just beyond the main mall at Pentagon City, also an easy walk. Lastly, there's also a Rite Aid in the Crystal City Shops area. And there's a row of restaurants down the street.

There's a library down the street as well.

Best part of the apartment itself is it's larger than in the city, quiet, and comfortable. It used to be a hotel, and now it's mostly residential. Staff are friendly.

For comparison, places in Courthouse along the orange/silver line might have similar prices, be a similar distance from school, and have good amenities, too.

Only complaint is that studios don't have their own washing/drying machine, and utilities, i.e. gas, water, electricity, are based on square footage, not use (about $90/mth for my studio), and wifi here is another $100. Not sure what the prices are like in other parts of VA, but I've heard DC wifi is at least cheaper.

For a general sense of this area, it's very safe. Feels a bit like a retirement community, even though most of my neighbors are students and families.

Also, it can access the yellow line, which is convenient if you need to go to the center of the city for anything.

Crystal Towers is pretty good

I enjoy living at the Crystal Towers. It's a very nice building, and everything here is in great shape. I love the gym, and when the weather is nice the pool and courtyard (with grills) is an excellent place to study or hang out. The staff here is friendly and helpful; I have never had a bad experience with someone who works here. Maintenance is especially great.

The location has pros and cons. On the one hand, the metro stop is right outside my door, and I'm in walking distance to bars, restaurants, and shopping. The ride to school is good- IF the blue line is working correctly. Oftentimes issues with WMATA make me wish I lived in DC. My social life can also feel a bit stunted at times- with all of my friends living in the District, it isn't always easy to make plans if I don't want to take the train in. The building is one train stop, or a five minute drive, or even a quick walk, away from Ronald Reagan airport. I can leave my home, go to the airport, get through security, and be at my gate, all in about half an hour. If you travel often, this is a very convenient location. One might expect noise issues, but there are none; the walls are thick and soundproof.

The place is also expensive. However, in comparison to rent in DC, it's a good value. I have a spacious studio with lots of storage, my cat is welcome, and there are great amenities.

The building also has a good community- there are frequent events, such as movie nights and holiday parties. There is also a nice breakfast served once a month.

My apartment is all carpet, which I don't love- I'd have preferred hardwood. I also have had plumbing issues on occasion (the shower drain is frequently stopped up). However, maintenance is always there to fix the problem quickly.

Crystal Towers - Great and affordable building!

Located right in downtown Crystal, this building offers amazing accessibility to public transportation by buses and metro as well as great restaurants and night-life activities for young professionals. I live in the Towers for about 10 months and really enjoy the apartment, the building, the location, and the neighborhood. I live on the 6th floor, so I hardly hear any street noise while still be able to enjoy my downtown view every single night! Staff is responsive and respect your privacy, great gym and pool, and also lots of storage space which is definitely a major thing when I considered renting my apartment. So far, I have no regrets moving in here at all.

Crystal Towers - best bang for your buck

Great management and staff - they are available at (most) times and they make it really convenient for you. The renovated apartments are pleasant and spacious. The balcony is HUGE. Lots of activities and best apt gym I've ever seen. Fab pool/courtyard

Just...weird

What gets me the most about Crystal Towers is that it lacks character. From the plastic vertical blinds in every apartment to the bland hallways, I feel like I live in a dorm, no matter how much decorating I do. There's also a very wide range of people living here - could be a pro for some, but as a single 20-something working professional I don't necessarily like living around elderly couples and a bunch of families - I don't even have friends over because I'm afraid of disturbing my neighbors.

Pros: Tons of closet space, close to Metro, the gym is okay but pretty small.

Cons: Weird location (unless you like living in a characterless concrete jungle full of hotels and office buildings), parking can be annoying and costs extra, generally lacks character.

Great location, very large units

This is a great location in South Arlington. This is an older building so the walls are thicker and more insulated. I do not have many issues with hearing my neighbors, and it is well insulated for winter.

Most of the maintenance staff are super friendly, but do not be surprised if you need to submit multiple maintenance requests for the same issue. The building manager and assistant manager are wonderful. The concierge staff are friendly. Some of the leasing agents leave a lot to be desired, but you will not interact much with them once you are a resident.

Getting around Pentagon City

Pentagon City Reviews

66 reviews
Pentagon City is nice and fairly quiet, which is good for studying. There are some students around but it's mostly families and working individuals. There's not a ton to do, but there are some nice places to walk, and there is a good array of restaurants. The apartment is close to a Harris Teeter and a Whole Foods and Costco.
Safe. Feels like a retirement community. Drivers stop to let you cross the street to the apartment.

For the metro, the ride itself is about 20 min. I just budget in extra time for walking and not wanting to arrive just on time. It shouldn't take 45 minutes to get to school unless they're doing maintenance. Then, add 10 minutes.
The Crystal City and Pentagon City area has a lot of restaurants and shopping in convenient walking distance. The area tends to clear out after 5 on weekdays, but is often busy on weekends, mostly with tourists. I have always felt safe walking alone in the area at whatever time of day/night.
There is not a lot of green space, unless you count Long Bridge "Park", which is a dead-end, cement "bridge" that looks over soccer and baseball fields with some views of D.C.
The location is great. It's a 7 minute walk to the blue line metro, and the total commute to campus is 25 minutes (when the blue line is running properly). An uber takes about 12 minutes and costs an average of $5 per ride (with uber pool). Pentagon City has just about everything you could need. There is a Whole Foods across the street, and the Fashion Center mall is right next to the metro station. There are restaurants, coffee shops, and convenience stores, and a very well maintained public park.
General vibe is 30-somethings wanting to settle down, lots of dogs. Not a huge social scene (which I'm A-OK with).

Pros:
-Very metro-accessible (blue/yellow, so can get into the city in multiple directions if there are delays)
-Walkable - easy to get to grocery store, Pentagon City mall, library, restaurants, etc. within minutes
-Quiet and safe, and generally well-lit in the evenings

Cons:
-I'd like to see a few more restaurant options. There are good casual dining options, like Naked Pizza, California Pizza Kitchen, and the mall food court, but besides Bonefish Grill there's not much a step up from that.
-I don't feel much sense of community, and don't know my neighbors. Not as diverse-seeming as other parts of DC.
The Pentagon City area is safe, quiet (except for big shopping weekends!), and well-lit. Grocery store (Harris Teeter) and tons of other shopping options for all other needs. The metro station is convenient to all area apartment complexes. Great green space/parks across from mall with lots of walking paths. Closest churches however are on 23rd St in Crystal City -- which is not too far of a walk in good weather!
There are dining and shopping options galore. A massive three story shopping mall directly across the street. There are multiple parks in the area and grocery shopping options are within a 15 minute walk. There is a public library nearby and many bus routes.
I like the neighborhood, lots of food options, close to a movie theater, and right next to a mall. Only downside is many of my friends live in D.C. and you can feel apart from the city often.
