About American Village

Located just minutes from downtown Durham, American Village is a quiet, residential neighborhood that's great for those who love the outdoors. The Duke forest and American Village park are two greats spots located in the area that offer great walking/bike trails. Besides that, you won't find much activity taking place around this neighborhood since its mainly residential.

Reviewers love this neighborhood for its peace and quiet. It's just a short trip to Duke's campus and only a 10 minute drive to nearby restaurants like Chipotle, McDonald's, etc. The area is not very walkable but the people are very friendly and you'll be hard-pressed to find many complaints.

American Village is a residential neighborhood without any bars or restaurants, so it's not the most exciting place ever. That being said, it's quiet, right on the edge of the Duke Forest (great hiking trails), a couple minutes away from campus and grocery stores/chain restaurants (Chipotle, chinese, etc), and only about 10 minutes from downtown Durham. We've never felt unsafe or uncomfortable while walking around after dark.
Nothing here, not super active neighborhood, dark at night. Not dangerous, but just not lively at night. Also we didn't have any trick-or-treaters at halloween.
Great location, just a 7 minute drive to campus. Very quiet, relatively safe. Cars parked outside, so not garage-secure, but overall happy with it.
Love it!
Quiet suburban-feel
5 minute drive to Fuqua/campus. Highway 15/501 is seconds away, making trips within and outside the city highly convenient. Essentially backs up to the Duke Forest with access to miles of trails.

Main downside is nothing is within walking distance (grocery, restaurants, etc.). Many people in this area bike, but be wary as there are not bike lanes.
Close to campus. Quiet and safe. Great area for running/ biking and right next to the Duke Forest.
Fantastic Neighbors.
