J501

501 Estates is a great neighborhood with tons of young families and young professionals. However, my building was not the greatest. There were a few units in my building where the people living there would smoke outside in the parking lot and it would migrate into our unit and my clothes started to smell like smoke. We had to call maintenance like 4-5 times about the smell and they attempted to fix it, but it did not work. Also, there were frequent fights in our parking lot and we had to call not just the office, but the police.
After all this, our management offered to move us to a different unit across the complex and we accepted. They then proceeded to remove the individuals from the unit that were causing issues and told us we could not move to the new unit even after we accepted. It has been two months since those induvials have moved and I still have to call the on-call officer about noise complaints.

Not a clean place

If you can get a house from the first street that is great, but the apartments are dirty. People have seen mice and cockroaches. It’s better than other places but definitely jot ideal. I recommend the complex next to us called Garret Farms, much more spacious and nicer.

Great for families

If you live in the houses is an amazing expirience, you have beautiful gardens and views and a lot of complements that are amazing. Is 15 minutes by car from school (but we have also a carpoolchat).

Spacious, brand-new apartment community

I visited a few buildings before deciding on 501 estates and I’m really happy I made this choice. We have a lot of space, vaulted ceilings and a working fireplace. My view is on a forest. I’m a 10 minute drive from school on a busy day. It’s very family-friendly as well, even though we don’t have kids ourselves. It’s always quiet and peaceful, but close to downtown if you do want fun nights out too. There are 2 dog parks, a nice gym, pool table, lounge area, pool… I’m super happy!

Getting around Garrett Road

Garrett Road Reviews

45 reviews
I have not been through the neighborhood very much, but from what I have seen, the residential side of Garrett Road (west of the Garrett Road / Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd intersection) is quiet and safe. The other side of the intersection however - and even the strip mall on the corner across from the Toyota dealership - is a bit rougher and more commercial of an area.
The location is right of US Highway 15 501. There are numerous shopping options located off of this road. The location also provides easy access to both Durham and Chapel Hill as well as Interstate 40. Also, the trails of Duke Forest are located just west of the property. All of these are positives. The negatives would be that a car is basically required to get anywhere.
There's nothing special nearby, you're kind of isolated, and have to drive to go anywhere fun. But, it's a safe residential neighborhood which is personally what I care about.
Great location between Durham and Chapel Hill. About a 10 min drive to school. Not gated and open air entry ways, so does not feel the most secure at times, but have not had any issues.
It’s very quiet; though, there have been car break ins at GW and other apartments in the area.
This is a very nice neighborhood,. There are many stores close by (driving distance), grocery store, gas station, restaurants, home depot, bed bath and beyond, target, etc., that make it convenient.

There are also 3 schools nearby, less than 5 minutes drive.
There's a Sam's and Super Target and Harris Teeter within 5min. Trader Joe's is 10-15min down 15-501, and the med school is about 10-12min away as well. More suburban with a running trail within a 2min run.
The neighborhood has a lot of traffic, but this community is relatively private, and surrounded by trees, so much of the neighborhood's effects are mitigated.
