Don't live here

Management and maintenance are terrible and untrustworthy. Complex is dirty (has a cockroach/bug issue), repairs for the building take a long time (garage door was broken for 2 months). Office staff is rude. Townies come and use the gym. Also the residents are not friendly. Don't live here.

Great Location and Amenities

Great apartment complex with an unbeatable location relative to Fuqua. 10-15 minutes walking distance to Fuqua or less than five minutes driving. The apartments are some of the most well-appointed in the area and almost all units have hardwood floors. The community has all the features you could want, and I’ve been impressed with the variety of fitness equipment in the community gym. The building is also adjacent to several restaurants so there are plenty of weeknight dinner options when I’m in a hurry.

The community is relatively quiet and family friendly. I’ve never had any issues with noise and my 2 year old daughter does just fine here. The staff is generally very responsive and helpful with anything I need.

The only thing I don’t like is that the layout of the building is a little confusing, but that seems to be the trend with most large apartment complexes in Durham.

I would definitely recommend this apartment complex to anyone looking to be close to campus and the social scene but who is looking to avoid some of the noise that comes with some of the more popular apartment complexes.

Expensive Rent, Mediocre Experience; Convenient Location though

Perks:
- Really convenient location (food plaza right down stairs, and not so far from school)
- Good security inside the building* (not outside the building though, but Durham as a whole is a dangerous place)
- Fairly good management team and cleanness is fair

Weaknesses:
- Expensive rent (that does not include water, electricity, or Internet)
- An isolated building on the street
- Mandatory valet trash fee each month ($30/mo)
- Not designed for a comfortable living style

Convenient to School, Quiet, Great Amenities

The location is great for going to and from school. I walk or ride a bike everyday. Most residents are either older graduate students or medical professionals making it a quiet and respectful community. The amenities are fantastic

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

123 reviews
There are food options nearby and most graduate students live in the neighborhood which makes planning social events easy. Not always the safest neighborhood but you always have a group of fellow students looking out for you.
Frequent crime reports.
I myself have woken up at night due to clearly audible shots fired (maybe 1mile away) and once reported a shooting after coming home late around 3AM which turned out to have happened at Duke Manor.
Intrusion may happen, therefore keep the doors locked.
Also, I would try to avoid a 1st floor apartment with direct access through the patio.
The neighborhood is really unsafe and you'll often hear about people get robbed on gunpoint on LaSalle street. There is literally nothing in the area, except a few restaurants at Erwin Street and Krogers which is 15 minute walk from the Heights.
It is highly recommended to not walk around in this area post sunset.
Great and safe neighborhood - quite close to most useful and day to day necessities. I'd say if you're commuting to West Campus it makes most sense for you to stay here!
Living in Erwin-Lasalle is very close to Duke University West campus schools such as Engineering, Environment, Graduate, Medicine.
Close to school. Quiet enough. Duke neurology and Millennium Hotel are nearby. Though no restaurants or stores nearby.
The neighbourhood is safe during the day, but make sure to stay indoors and not wander during the night.
Campus Walk is well located both in terms of proximity to both the campus and basic amenities. However, after 6 pm at nights, the neighbourhood gets very lonely which makes it all the more unsafe to venture.
Recently there have been many break-ins in and around apartments in the neighbourhood, although no one was harmed.
