Good

The location is good for where I need to go. The state of the apartment is okay, not great but it has what I need. The management is generally nice but not always the most responsive.

Good Enough

I’d say that living here for M1 and M2 year is fine. It’s close to the hospital, you have a lot of peers nearby, don’t have to worry about street parking (but make sure you have a pass and that you’re visitors park correctly or else YOU WILL be towed), and feels safe. However you will by no means be living in luxury and nearly every apartment here has some issue. Maintenance does their best but you will be getting the landlord special for most issues. All in all the place is good enough for the price and proximity you want for the first two years. After that point there’s no real reason to stay so close and pay this price. Live a little further and pay less and live nicer. I’d also say that living here is actually further from Taubman library than Kerry town (depending on location) so you aren’t actually necessarily living closer.

Great location, ok accommodation

Island Drive is a great place to live to save money while still living close to the medical school and hospital. Many med students end up living there so you’ll regularly see a big group of students all walking to school together. Island Drive is unfortunately quite a ways away from Kerrytown and downtown so you feel a little isolated. Also be sure to get a parking pass, the lots are regularly patrolled and visitors will get towed often within 30 minutes of parking and even late at night.

Cheap, close to the hospital but not the best management service. Classic collegetown

Great proximity, okay amenities

It’s an old but cozy apartment in white coat area that has everything I need - nice spacious living room, good kitchen and dining area, bedrooms have decently spacious closets. There is a washer and dryer in the basement which works well though a phone app payment. This is as cheap as you can get a place this close to the hospital. Cons: No dishwasher, and sometimes it takes a couple calls to get maintenance requests done. But it’s a nice comfy living space with very few extra costs - gas and water are covered within rent, so we only pay for internet and electricity on the side.

Best Location, Comfortable Accommodations

Proximity to the hospital is hard to beat. The neighborhood is nice and there are plenty of places to run and spend time at Island Park. Spacious living room, good bathroom, nice sunlight in kitchen and living room. Maintenance requests are not the quickest, but not the slowest either; usually takes about 1-5 days. Overall, nothing sticks out as particularly wonderful or terrible.

Island Drive Apartments

Best parts of Island Drive are that it is affordable, extremely close to the medical campus, and sits right along the Huron River with its accompanying trails and parks. Surrounding neighborhood consists of other apartment complexes which house predominantly other health professions students, graduate students, and some young families. Management is hit or miss with regards to responsiveness to maintenance requests or other assistance such as parking passes for visitors. As a customer for going on 4 years, I wish I felt more valued by the management. Amenities include free parking, free access to small gym and pool at the complex, heat, trash, and water included in rent, laundry facilities on site.

Great location, but don't expect too much

Pros:

- If you want to be able to roll out of bed and get to the medical school or hospital in 15 minutes, this is the place for you. You can't get much closer than Island Drive.

- Many other medical students live here

- Apartment itself isn't bad, but isn't that great either

- In-building laundry (not free, but convenient)

- Parking included

- Price for a 1-BR is the best you can get in the area

Cons:

- If you need maintenance, they will take a long time to come and you'll have to call them multiple times. It is poorly coordinated.

- Walls are not insulated well so you can hear every footstep upstairs

- I've just come to terms with the fact that I'll live with centipedes and spiders. I would look elsewhere if that's a problem for you.

- No dishwasher

- No dog policy, cats okay with a fee

Island Drive

It’s an old complex, with sufficient basic requirements. Helpful staff and maintenance. It’s well located between central and north, except that bus routes to north campus require a 5 min walk to the bus stop.

North Campus is the place to be!! Lots of trails and nature for walking, NCRB gym nearby, grocery stores, gas, food, and more. Mostly graduate students up here so quieter but also within 10 min drive to downtown. There's always parking too.
I have lived in A2 for going on 14 years, it is sort of like having a friend, even when you are alone.

Me and a friend and her dog visit neighborhood parks.

That dog met the caged bald eagle at Leslie Science Center.. and twang!
To the end of his leash! The eagle looked at him like he was the most delicious thing he's seen all Winter. We just trudged thru the snow to view the cages, (both eagle and dog are ok)
Great quieter area very close to the hospital, and close to many other med students. It’s a more peaceful area that’s a tad farther from downtown, but for someone who likes a quieter space to study or nice spaces to walk and hang out with friends, white coat area is right by the river and Island Drive Park, and there are often med student social events held at White Coat Area because so many medical students choose to live here.
I personally really like North Campus, although it is farther away from downtown and the law school. There are several restaurants right near my apartment complex and the commute to school is very easy. I also find the lack of nightlife a plus, because it means the neighborhood is a lot quieter and safer than other areas of Ann Arbor.
Overall this area is great for walking to the medical school and hospital, living near other medical students, and especially having easier parking than in the central downtown/kerrytown areas. You also escape the rowdiness of undergrads by living here. The main reason I gave it a "7/very good" rating was because I don't like feeling isolated in location from central campus. Walking from White Coat to restaurants/bars downtown is at least 20-25 minutes, and often I decide not to go just because I don't want to walk there and back. After 6PM everyday parking is free downtown (free all day on Sunday), which is nice, except you don't always want to drive if you are going out to bars. It would be nice to have some type of casual coffee shop or restaurant in walkable distance to White Coat, but there is not. (edit: there is one breakfast-like cafe near White Coat, but it gets busy and is over-priced). There are some restaurants and coffee shops down the street on Plymouth road (not downtown) which is an easy 5 minute drive.
Multiple apartment/condo complexes within 10 minute walk of one another creating central location for many medical students of the University of Michigan. Park is 5 minute walk away. Lecture halls are 15 minutes door to hall. Hospital is 15-20 minutes from door to specific area of hospital. Never any safety issues. Parking can be strict and limited. Few stores and restaurants nearby.
This neighborhood is a 10 minute walk to the hospital which makes is very popular for medical students, residents, and even attendings. It is quiet, but it can be very busy in the morning and around 4pm when everyone is arriving/leaving their shifts. Grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants are a 5 min drive away near north campus.
Pros: beautiful - near the Huron River (5 min walk!) and trails and lots of trees. Very quiet. Residential area - maybe only 20% students vs. long-term residents where I am, though I'm close to the hospitals and med students, architects, and engineers all live up here. Very safe, and I see deer or even a raccoon once in a while. Grocery store is 1 mile away (Kroeger).

Cons: less social than I like in terms of proximity to Rossers. There is only one on my street that I know of.
