Third Floor Island Drive
No bells and whistles, but has been a comfortable place to live for the past 4 years within easy walking distance of the hospital.
Pro's: third floor ensures it is well-heated in the winter (you cannot control the heat), AC unit in the family room, good amount of space for 2 people, free parking, great location for a med student, very quiet neighborhood, great running trails nearby, grocery store is a 10 min drive, pretty responsive maintenance team.
Con's: older appliances, not a ton of counter-space, pay extra for pets, parking is not covered, no dishwasher and laundry is costs $3 per load for units in the basement that only accept quarters, snow removal service is mediocre, no ability to compost.

Island drive
The apartments are old, so there are sometime problems with needing maintenance; however the maintenance people are always very helpful and relatively prompt. The location of the apartment is awesome for working in/around the hospital and it is nice not to have to worry about parking for myself and any visitors.

Easy, homey, and affordable
I have lived with the same roommate in a 2-bedroom apartment in Island Drive for all four years of medical school. Our 750 square foot apartment has plenty of space and is cozy and homey. It is by no means glamorous, but we have painted and decorated and made the space our own. Downsides are that there is no dishwasher, but it really is not much of an issue as we don't make lots of dishes and they are easy to clean on our own. Perfect location relative to the hospitals and medical school and impossible to find a better price for what we're getting. Quiet neighborhood and very easily accessible from all areas of Ann Arbor.

Island Drive Apartments
It is great mostly because of location- it is a 5 minute walk to the hospital. Other than that, it has what you need and is very basic. No dishwasher.

Island Drive Apartments Review
Great Location!

Dated but located ideally
Island Drive Apartments are definitely dated and old. However, they have all the necessary amenities to survive medical school. Due to their location near the medical center, their price cannot be beat.

Good Enough For Me
No complaints. It's a perfectly adequate apartment -- nothing fancy, but also on the cheap side. The management is also fairly quick to respond, which is helpful.

Economy Option
Housing in Ann Arbor can sometimes be quite difficult. This is a great option for a no "window treatments" kind of option. Quiet area very close to the hospital for quick access to those facilities. A little further from the city center but for the price it is worth the extra walk.

Old, poorly maintained but livable
Gets a low rating because management can do a lot better job maintaining these apartment buildings. Living here 3 years now, I've had to deal with leaking faucets/toilets, drippy refrigerators, and sporadic heating. Maintenance is generally pretty responsive if you're polite and call them during office hours, so these building ARE livable. Rent is expensive compared to the overall quality of these buildings, but it's difficult to find anywhere cheaper THIS CLOSE to the hospital. Check out Riverside Park Place or Nielsen Court condos or Med Center Court apartments before committing to a place and see which price/quality level you prefer.

Great location, but bare bones
I've lived in "The Islands", as I affectionately call them, for the past five years. Parking is easy and you can't beat the proximity to the hospital. They allow cats, which was a plus for my roommate and I. The apartments are nice enough but you aren't going to get any crazy awesome amenities (like a dishwasher or in-unit laundry). The leasing office gets a bad reputation but there has been a turn over of staff and they are getting better. It is a safe complex with lots of fellow medical students. Its nice to be able to walk to and from class with your friends.
