Close to the hospital

This apartment complex is fine. I've lived there the entire four years of medical school. My main complaints with this apartment complex is their parking rules (only one parking spot/bedroom), the frequent changes with management, and their inconsistency with enforcing rules. The positive aspects of this apartment complex is that they are within walking distances to the hospital and the maintenance usually responds within 24 hours if you call.

Convenient, has all necessities

Island drive is as close as it gets to the hospital, a super convenient walk. It’s a little shabby looking on the outside but can be really homey inside! The rent includes gas, water, heat, and it’s the most affordable place for the location. Downsides are the lack of dishwasher and older equipment and amenities.

Comfortable apt, not amazing

I was looking for an affordable 1 bedroom apartment with easy parking and Island Drive fit best. While 1,060 is not my definition of "affordable," it is actually one of the cheapest 1 bedroom apartments you can get in Ann Arbor that isn't a complete dump. The apartments are spacious with lots of windows for natural light, and rent covers water and gas which is great. Parking is extremely easy and there are always spaces available (plus we are walking distance to school and hospital). The biggest issues I have living here are the walls are pretty thin (noise), kitchens don't have a dishwasher, and management can sometimes be slow to fix issues. I've had things come up where they will arrive same day and fix it immediately, then other issues where I have to call them over and over to come fix something. I will say they are great about plowing snow and shoveling sidewalks in the winter.

Does the job

Comfortable living environment and really close to the school. Had some trouble with heating and took some time to resolve. Management can be unresponsive at times.

Old apartment, average management/maintenance, overpriced

The apartment itself is okay, very clearly an old place but with some more recent additions so the bathroom and kitchen are decent. The walls and floors are thin and you can hear everytime a neighbor opens or closes their door or the front door. A/C is through a window unit and heating is centrally controlled, which means you have no control over the heat in the winter. My apartment is often horribly hot in the winter and I have to leave the window open.

When I first moved in, the property/site manager was terrible and maintenance requests took weeks to be addressed. A new manager came in in fall and things have slightly improved since then, but it still takes about a week to solve major (but non-emergency) maintenance issues.

They are way overpriced due to the location, but there are few spots closer to the hospital so they can charge ridiculous prices. I'll be moving out at the end of my lease since the problems I've had here seem to be more stressful than a longer commute.

3 Roommates

One of the few options for 3 roommates. The third room is quite small but definitely livable.

Cheap, Close, and Comfortable

While Island Drive certainly isn't luxurious, we've found the apartment to meet all of our needs! It is close to the hospital and our friends, is a short uber or walk to downtown, and is inexpensive so that we can spend our money on our other priorities such as dining and traveling. The management is responsive to maintenance requests and our neighbors are friendly. We'll be here for all 4 years of medical school for sure!

North Campus is the place to be!! Lots of trails and nature for walking, NCRB gym nearby, grocery stores, gas, food, and more. Mostly graduate students up here so quieter but also within 10 min drive to downtown. There's always parking too.
I have lived in A2 for going on 14 years, it is sort of like having a friend, even when you are alone.

Me and a friend and her dog visit neighborhood parks.

That dog met the caged bald eagle at Leslie Science Center.. and twang!
To the end of his leash! The eagle looked at him like he was the most delicious thing he's seen all Winter. We just trudged thru the snow to view the cages, (both eagle and dog are ok)
Great quieter area very close to the hospital, and close to many other med students. It’s a more peaceful area that’s a tad farther from downtown, but for someone who likes a quieter space to study or nice spaces to walk and hang out with friends, white coat area is right by the river and Island Drive Park, and there are often med student social events held at White Coat Area because so many medical students choose to live here.
I personally really like North Campus, although it is farther away from downtown and the law school. There are several restaurants right near my apartment complex and the commute to school is very easy. I also find the lack of nightlife a plus, because it means the neighborhood is a lot quieter and safer than other areas of Ann Arbor.
Overall this area is great for walking to the medical school and hospital, living near other medical students, and especially having easier parking than in the central downtown/kerrytown areas. You also escape the rowdiness of undergrads by living here. The main reason I gave it a "7/very good" rating was because I don't like feeling isolated in location from central campus. Walking from White Coat to restaurants/bars downtown is at least 20-25 minutes, and often I decide not to go just because I don't want to walk there and back. After 6PM everyday parking is free downtown (free all day on Sunday), which is nice, except you don't always want to drive if you are going out to bars. It would be nice to have some type of casual coffee shop or restaurant in walkable distance to White Coat, but there is not. (edit: there is one breakfast-like cafe near White Coat, but it gets busy and is over-priced). There are some restaurants and coffee shops down the street on Plymouth road (not downtown) which is an easy 5 minute drive.
Multiple apartment/condo complexes within 10 minute walk of one another creating central location for many medical students of the University of Michigan. Park is 5 minute walk away. Lecture halls are 15 minutes door to hall. Hospital is 15-20 minutes from door to specific area of hospital. Never any safety issues. Parking can be strict and limited. Few stores and restaurants nearby.
This neighborhood is a 10 minute walk to the hospital which makes is very popular for medical students, residents, and even attendings. It is quiet, but it can be very busy in the morning and around 4pm when everyone is arriving/leaving their shifts. Grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants are a 5 min drive away near north campus.
Pros: beautiful - near the Huron River (5 min walk!) and trails and lots of trees. Very quiet. Residential area - maybe only 20% students vs. long-term residents where I am, though I'm close to the hospitals and med students, architects, and engineers all live up here. Very safe, and I see deer or even a raccoon once in a while. Grocery store is 1 mile away (Kroeger).

Cons: less social than I like in terms of proximity to Rossers. There is only one on my street that I know of.
