Good apartment complex for families

It is a great apartment complex in terms of having many families around each other. It is also near a bus that goes directly to UCLA. While the rent is not objectively cheap, it is affordable relative to other housing in the area. Management is generally responsive to issues in terms of fixing any problems that arise in the apartment.

One negative is that there is little security for packages and mail, which are visible from the street. It’s also unclear how accommodating management has been to people who have suffered financially because of the pandemic.

Rent is high and conditions aren’t great

University Housing operates much like a company town. I am also a student worker and almost 1/2 of my salary goes toward rent. Conditions have gotten so bad that tenants started a rent strike in March of 2020. Since the beginning of the strike, University Housing threatened to place academic holds and send collections agencies after students who were unable to make rent during the pandemic. There have also been racist incidents where white tenants scared Black tenants into moving out. There was also an incident where UCPD stopped and questioned a Black mother and her children (who live in University Housing) on suspicions that they didn’t live here.
The University also occasionally forgets to collect trash, which piles up, especially over breaks.
Overall, the community is caring and supportive among my fellow tenants involved in organizing the rent strike and uplifting the struggle of graduate students of color. I would encourage you to get plugged into that group if you’re thinking about moving into University Housing.

Decent price, good choice for students who are new to LA

Living in UCLA housing was a very convenient choice for me as I moved to LA from out of state and did not have an opportunity to tour apartments. The price is good for LA and the units are large and in good condition. The biggest issue I have noticed is the lack of a mail room, as package theft is extremely common. Although theft of mail and bikes is frequent, I have never had any concerns for my personal safety within the apartment complex. The location is further from campus than I expected, and it is quite far from a lot of off-campus things (such as most summer internships). It is reasonably convenient to get to campus, though, and I appreciate being in walking distance of several grocery stores.

University village is the best

Loved my time here, it is hard to beat the proximity to both the beach and campus for the price. Have to enter a lottery with Uasra to get it though.

Awesome Apartment and Exceptional Community

Awesome experience, no real complaints. Soundproofing is amazing, grounds are kept very clean, and all maintenance issues have been promptly dealt with. Apartment itself is simple and spacious in a very easy location for kids' schools, grocery stores, and proximity to LA's amenities. The community of residents is very welcoming, friendly, and safe. Couldn't think of a better place for young children to grow up in a major city. Only complaints are parking units are too small for some normal cars and location is not as close to UCLA campus as I'd like.

Affordable housing, nice shared amenities

The interior of the apartment (cupboards, stove, showers, etc.) is dated and in need of some replacements/ repairs, but the housing is affordable and most of the shared amenities are well maintained (playgrounds, grills, etc.) It is reasonable in terms of pricing, though the annual increases seem excessive. The school district is pretty abysmal, and U Village seems intentionally drawn out of a much stronger district (the people who live across the street enjoy much better public schools).

Decent Housing for Below-Market Rent

The best part about university housing is the below-market rent. My spouse and I otherwise would not have been able to afford a two-bedroom. The neighbors are friendly and helpful, and maintenance always responded promptly. Apartment was clean and amenities worked. It's a ways away from campus for but not bad for L.A.

Review

Apartments are clean and fairly well-maintained. Good location near transit that can take people to campus. The university should take all steps possible to keep rents stabilized - or even lower than what they currently are - if feasible. Yes, the rent is quite good for the area, but the reality is that nobody would live here if it weren't for the fact they need to attend campus (and need to be in close proximity for convenience). We are bound to the West LA area because the campus is there, and trying to get through traffic every day from a further region of the city is impractical and unrealistic to ask of the majority of students. The vast majority of us have taken out loans to help pay for housing, and this needs to be fully acknowledged and acted upon by the university (by taking all measures to keep rents low, low, low).

Feels very in the center of everything so things are not super close but not far either. Neighborhood is safe, stores and everything I need is close by.
This is one of the safer areas in LA, it’s about a 15 to 20 minute drive to UCLA, and the same distance to the beach. It’s also conveniently right at the intersection of the 405 and 10 highways. There is a very nice neighborhood across the street where we can walk, and there is a park. It is right next to a highway and Sawtelle is a busy street, so it can be quite loud. LA has a significant homeless population, and this exists around the housing as well, but the housing complex is a gated community. There are many restaurants nearby. Overall, it’s a good neighborhood.
There is a big park with grills, tennis courts, hockey court, baseball, soccer... trader joes, whole foods, ralphs, vons. No traffic around, in the middle of ucla, lax airport, venice/sta monica, downtown. Easy access to fwy.
Everything you need if you're not trying to go out on the town all the time. Close to a great farmer's market and the hot West LA neighborhoods.
Neighborhood is good. Convenient to 405 and UCLA. Some stuff within walking distance, plus short drive to Sawtelle, Palms, Venice, and Culver.
There's not a lot going on in the neighborhood, but it's fairly convenient to get to campus, and there are plenty of grocery stores. Before covid, it was sometimes inconvenient when I wanted to do social things in other parts of the city, since it can take a long time to go places by public transit.
These apartments are only 20 minutes away from campus by car, or about 35-50 minutes by bus. Two bus lines (SM Big Blue Bus lines 8 and 17) run near here and go straight to campus every 20 minutes, and we're also close to the Expo line which goes to Santa Monica and Downtown.

There are a lot of good restaurants and things to do nearby, and we're within walking distance to a Ralphs and a few other places. The stores around here have decent sized parking lots and don't get too busy. I don't feel unsafe walking around or taking public transport here.
There have been a couple of safety issues, but that’s fairly small considering the 1,600 units.
