Noise and Poor Maintenance

I think a lot depends on who owns the unit you rent, but overall this building has been an irritant, and I will be relieved to move out.

The only reason to live here is to be close to school. There is almost always construction, and it's almost always noisy. For a while we had water shut off every few days or weeks for repairs. Then there were the months when the fire alarm went off frequently. Currently, for almost two months now, they have been doing something with the windows, meaning that there are workmen going up and down all the time, able to see in if the curtains are open. They are tapping, drilling, scraping, etc., and there is a constant loud drilling sound. This starts around 8am almost every weekday morning. Furthermore, all screens have been removed. No one has been able to tell residents when the work will finish or when we will have screens again.

Most mornings, garbage is loudly picked up between 6:30 and 7:30, both from this building and the one next to it.

The heating and cooling is not good. Each unit has control to a point, but there is only heat in winter and air conditioning in summer, so it is often very hot in the shoulder seasons and when the weather is unexpectedly warm. Even when I had screens, I could not sleep with windows open because the building across the way has lights on all the time.

The building handyman is very nice but largely unable to do his job. I have simply given up on getting my lights fixed, and had a very simple problem with my shower that eventually had to be fixed by an outside company.

The office is basically fine, but only open between 9am and 6pm on weekdays, and 10am and 2pm on weekends, so it can be hard to get packages if you work regular hours.

At one point while I was away, there was a water problem affecting several units, and I got a call from a neighbor saying that my door had been left open and the water left running indefinitely. Management did not seem to think this was a problem.

I don't know if other buildings in the area are much better, but I would recommend looking around.

It's fine for a few years. Very close to school.

I'm on the 9th floor at the back of the building, so it's relatively clean, if dusty. However, it is noisy at night sometimes because of all of the students and frats in the area, and I hear the loading/garbage trucks in the morning. Some people do not hear these things at all, and if you are a good sleeper you will probably be fine. There is great daytime light through the huge windows in all units (I'm pretty sure), but at night there is a lot of ambient light that is next to impossible to keep out. I was assured this was not going to be the case, so if this is an issue for you, make sure your landlord is clear that he/she has actually first hand experience of the noise/light, or ask previous renters. There is only heat in winter an only air conditioning in summer, so the temperature is frequently too high in shoulder seasons. Each unit has a control, but whether you can get hot or cold air from it is not up to you. Also there are have been a lot of maintenance issues, with water frequently being shut off for repair, but this has tapered off this year. Individual unit upkeep is up to the unit owner. The office manager is good, although the weekend people are less good. You can only get packages between 9am and 6pm.

Letterman Studio Review

The building is very old and there might be construction or renovation during the year. The studio where I live is on the first floor and there are shrubs behind the window, so I could not open the window. In addition, internet is not included in the rent.

You get what you pay for

The Letterman House is really nice because it's so close to campus. It's also honestly on the same level as the Statesman, except it's cheaper because you don't have a 24/7 doorman, which I personally don't really need. The only downside is that the management of the apartment can sometimes be very unresponsive. We had a lot of issues with the laundry machines and it took almost a month and a half for them to resolve it (yay free laundry?). But overall, I'd definitely say it's worth every penny, especially considering how close it is to campus. Problems in the apartment will vary depending on the individual owner of the unit.

Conveniently located for GWU

It's clean and pretty well managed apartment. It is conveniently located for George Washington University students. It is very safe and it is not too loud considering a lot of students are living in the building. Also, it is pretty close to national mall!

The Letterman House

As a student of GWU, The Letterman house is a great location from school and near by essentials like Whole Foods and CVS, There are a good range of fast food options. The building management is extremely helpful and outgoing, I have had only great experiences with them. The unit is large and spacious. Lighting is a bit of an issue, but we've made do. Overall very happy.

Safe, Clean Building

Great building with in-building washer/dryers that accept credit/debit cards.
The building is in a very safe neighborhood with very friendly building staff. The common spaces are well taken care of by a very attentive maintenance man. The manager, Stanley, is very kind and attentive. The only downside is that you can only pick up packages between 9 AM to 6 PM on weekdays, and between 10-2 on weekends, as those are the only times the manager is in. Also, you do hear some noise Friday/Saturday nights as there are frat houses close by, so this should be something to think about prior to moving in.

Amazing Location For a Steal

The Letterman is a great place to live for the law students. It takes me less than five minutes to get to class and it's overall a very quiet apartment building. The residents here are mainly students, government workers, or senior citizens so it is not rowdy. The apartments themselves are all individually owned so I can't say much for the conditions of each apartment. The manager here, Stan, is a great person who is willing to help with anything. The only down side to this apartment is that the manager is not here 24/7, so if you're locked out, it's a huge ordeal to get it resolved. Also, if you live on the side facing F street, it can get kind of loud on the weekends because of the undergrads. Other than that, it's been a great experience.

Great experience

Management has been great! Overall its pretty quiet. There are many young kids because of its proximity to GW. Generally I have been very pleased.

Love this area, right near Logan Circle and 14th street which has so much good food and nightlife!
Amazing neighborhood. Close to GW and close to so much good food and nice restaurants.
Sometimes noisy, but the front desk quickly deal with it if you ask
Great, Safe neighborhood with great food and close to campus.
Foggy Bottom/West End are great for 1Ls -- you will get to know the area around school and you will be conveniently within a few blocks of GW. There are a lot of food options, but night life is lacking (though you're a short walk to DuPont and Georgetown). There are plenty of busses and metros around.
Good only in the sense that it is near the school, that you can receive warnings from the school and D.C. (if signing up), that you can be assured of safety generally even if coming in late due to pulling off night studies in the library. However, noise levels are high, so you can hardly study indoors at home because of people wanting to earn money in exchange for their loud and terrible performances. This means that you may ultimately end up outside for work or rest during morning/afternoon. Noise in the evening can be high too due to some people having gone drunk. Noise (some loud trucks and mostly machine sounds) and lights can be too much for sleeping deeply.
It's really only convenient because of how close the law school is. Otherwise, I would not live here. Definitely a business/corporate area that shuts down on the weekends. Not a lot of options for going out to eat unless it's either overpriced or fast food. The only grocery store that's walking distance is Whole Foods, which I personally hate shopping at.
The Aston is the furthest GW housing from the campus, so we had to walk more than any other student to get to class. We are also the furthest away from any Metro station, but still not considerably far when you look at the big picture. There are grocery stores, bars, and restaurants nearby which is a perk, but it is pretty noisy around here. But I guess that's anywhere in Downtown DC. There are always cars honking, ambulance sirens, etc. But the area seems pretty safe.
