Review

It is a very nice place to live with very good amenities. It is close to the metro, and you have a parking access to the grocery store (ideal when it rains or snows).
The only thing I don't like is the price (you enter with a nice deal, but they get you back the second year).

Good location for a student

I am a student at University of the District of Columbia so this apartment is a great location for me. I can walk to class, the metro, and the grocery store. I also sometimes walk one neighborhood down to Cleveland Park (about ten minutes) to the restaurants that are located there because there is a good variety. The rent can be quite expensive for a student but if you can find some good roommates this is a nice option.

Great Location, Inconsistent Management

Great location, right on the metro, great pool and outdoor space. However, garage is in disrepair, poor maintenance in general (things keep breaking), attentive to maintenance requests, but a little disorganized. We have had maintenance staff visit our apartment several times for the same request, when the issue was fixed with the first visit--seems like a little problem with the ticketing system. NB: Bedbugs are present in the building
. Friendly staff. Active tenants association. Pets are allowed, to some chagrin among some tenants of the building. Active group of dog owners who arrange "Puppy Play Time" weekly and inform each other of pet issues, local dog sitters, great vets, things to look out for (for instance, a weird spot in the yard that spooks most of the dogs).

3003 Van Ness

Other than a small problem with a few mice in the winter, I enjoy living here very much. The location is unbeatable, right by the metro, bus stops, and grocery store (Giant). There's a lot of other stores and restaurants within walking distance as well. Friendly management and neighbors, who try to help you resolve your issues. They were great in helping resolve our mouse problem. All utilities except internet/cable are included, but there is free wifi in the lobby and a business center for residents' use.

Great Quality for Reasonable Price

Everything about this apartment building is great - except, as a young person, the location. After two years at 3003 Van Ness, I started to crave more of the action that comes with city living. That being said, if that's not a crucial component of being in DC for you, this building is top-notch.

Nice building in a great location

The best part about 3003 Van Ness is the location. It's close to the metro, and has all your basic conveniences. There is a Giant and a Walgreens close by, and tons of bars and restaurants close by on Connecticutt Avenue. I've always felt fairly safe in and around the building, and the building has solid amenities, some of which are being renovated.

3003 Van Ness

This is a large complex (approx. 625 units) with large apartments (750-985 sf), and is a rent control apartment. It is less than 2 blocks from the metro, a grocery story and 2 drug stores. The amenities include a large swimming pool; a BBQ/picnic area; business center; small gym; parking garage; laundry room on every floor; 24-hour concierge desk; social room. Both cats and dogs are allowed but you must pay a monthly $65 fee. I stay due to the area convenience - metro, grocery/drug stores - and the size of the apt. The rent is overpriced; management does the bare minimum to maintain the property and never enforces or adheres to DC rent or noise ordinances. Once I have completed school, I plan on leaving.

Huge space, old neighbors

This is a fifteen minute metro ride from campus, right on the redline, and the apartments are huge. It is very close to UDC so some young folks, but at times it can feel very old. That said, there is a beautiful pool and balcony area in the summer, pets welcome, and all utilities included.

Forest Hills Reviews

The Forest Hills/Van Ness neighborhood is great. It is a very short walk to Tenleytown (15 mins) and a 10 min walk to the Van Ness Metro, Giant Food, CVS, and a plethora of good coffee shops and restaurants. The M4 bus stops 3 blocks up the road and takes you straight to AU and the L2 runs very consistently on Connecticut Ave. The Chesapeake backs up to Forrest Hills Park and Rock Creek is right down the street with lots of trails. Overall, the whole neighborhood is very safe and student-friendly.
The neighborhood is very nice. Many things are in walking distance like a few restaurants, a movie theater, and the Cleveland Park Metro stop. It is a bit of a food desert in that the grocery stores and restaurants that are accessible are a tad on the expensive side. The neighborhood is pretty quiet and people are usually pretty friendly. Overall, a decent neighborhood for people at different stages in their lives.
Van Ness is on several bus routes and very near to the (Van Ness) metro stop. Moving off of Connecticut Ave. quickly becomes entirely residential, but there are restaurants and other amenities (such as grocery stores, dry cleaners, etc) along Connecticut. It's not a crazy or busy neighborhood like several others, which personally, I appreciate, but it does mean you'll have to go a bit farther than home if you're looking to go out for the night.
Van Ness/Forest Hills is quiet and a little boring. Not a lot of places to go out to eat or grab a drink in the immediate area. However, Cleveland Park and Tenleytown are fairly close. I love walking our dog up around International Drive and the embassies there. We frequently see deer coming up from Rock Creek Park, and the UDC/Howard Law students are mostly very courteous (many of them live in the neighborhood too, so they care about it also). The neighborhood feels very safe--lots of police presence, Secret Service sub-station in the neighborhood, and the local vagabonds are not aggressive to pedestrians--they mostly mind their own business.
I like the area on Connecticut avenue, just wish there were better food options. Great community, overall safe, love the HBCU next door (UDC). UDC is a great HBCU and community to be near.
Nice, quiet, and safe with some restaurants in the area. Seems very family friendly and slower paced than downtown. Easy access to grocery stores.
Close to the Zoo and great restaurants. Close enough to Downtown, but far enough away where you're not in the chaos but still in DC.
Pros: safe area (I can let my dog out after midnight and feel safe), <10 min walk to metro, bus stop right outside, grocery store/CVS <10 min walk away (although the giant isn't the greatest), lots of on-street parking available (great for guests),
Cons: not a lot of activities within walking distance
