B9

Nicest apartment I’ve ever lived in. Management is sub-par (not very helpful or responsive) but the quality of apartment makes it worth it.

Nice apartment, challenging management

The apartment itself is pretty decent. I haven’t had any serious problems with plumbing, appliances, etc. Considering there are a lot of Duke students, the building is pretty quiet all hours of the day. Having the parking ramp right outside your apartment is awesome. Very convenient to grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants, etc.

My main issues have been with the management. They are slow to respond to issues - for example, I was charged for additional storage units that I didn’t rent for a number of months. They eventually fixed the problem, but it was frustrating nonetheless. As well, they are quick to fine for small things, including leaving your valet trash can out after pick up.

Great

I've loved living at Berkshire. The location is perfect (right next to Harris Teeter/restaurants/Ninth St and two shuttle stops that drop you off directly in front of the hospital), it's great for anyone who has dogs (seriously I think there are more amenities for dogs than people), and everything is fairly new within the last 5 years. The clubhouse/main office also has a great conference room for studying. Downside is it's definitely among the more expensive options in Durham. As a result, I think my roommate and I are the only medical students living there (as opposed to somewhere like Trinity where half the class typically lives), but it definitely hasn't been isolating or anything, just something to be aware of. Nothing but good things to say!

Upscale Durham

This is definitely on the more expensive end of Durham rentals. But this is what we wanted when we moved here. Great property, great amenities, close to the hospital and Harris Teeter

Great place - highly recommended

The apartment complex is great - management is responsive and organized. The facilities are well taken-care of and clean. The apartments are very nice and large - new appliances in the kitchen and large closets. The gym is fantastic and the pool and BBQ areas are very nice!

International Student

Good space. Love the home appliances, maintenance is very efficiency and reception very useful. Most of my friends live very close to me, is easy to do work, have parties and find/give rides. Being 2 minutes from Harris Teeter (Grocery Store) is absolutely great!
Can be a bit noise sometimes, but nothing major.

Great place

B9 has great amenities and everything stills seems very new. Maintenance requests are easy to submit and usually filled within 24 hours. The location is convenient, and the clubhouse has plenty of space to meet with classmates. Cons: you will hear your upstairs neighbor, many apartments are not in temp-controlled hallways, and parking garage gate is slow.

Getting around Ninth Street

Ninth Street Reviews

Neighborhood has been great. Haven't been commuting to school all that frequently for obvious reasons, but takes less than 10 minutes to do so. I can grab everything I need and meet with friends all within walking distance. Durham could use more street lights in general, but in terms of safety, I think 9th street is your best option!
Best place to live hands down. Next to the supermarket, so many food options and many complexes in the area. Near downtown and Duke. Great if you’re new in town because it is super safe. Perfect if you have a car because the only downside is that depending on what Duke school you’re in it might not be walking distance.
Ninth Street is super walkable and majority of Fuquans live in the area. Definitely worth it to pay a little more to live in walking distance of so many classmates. Plus the restaurants on Ninth Street are great, and a short walk (~3 mins) to East Campus to use the walking trail!
Everything is close: other complexes like S9, B9; bars like flying bull, the tavern, supermarkets like Harris Teeter or Whole Foods, East campus hiking route.

You can get to the school by bus (45 mi) or by car (10 min). Carpooling is very commom.
Neighborhood is fine. All the Duke grad students live in the same area so it makes for a pleasant student community, and there are some decent restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance.
Harris Teeter and Whole Foods are right nearby, and the area feels generally safe. 5 min from the highway if you need to drive outside of Durham. ~10 min to get to the WaDuke/Science Drive.
The 9th St. neighborhood is great because it is within walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants on 9th St. It could be better if it were closer to Fuqua and/or downtown Durham.
All the restaurants around the 9th street area are within 5 mins walk from the complex. The campus is an 8-10 minute drive. Downtown Durham is also an 8-10 minute drive away.
