Couldn't have a better location!

7 minutes from my apartment to my seat in class! It has everything that I would need and is priced reasonably (although the price has gone up the past two years). There is no dishwasher. It overall has a good amount of space!

Island Drive Apartments

A bit worn around the edges, but a nice place to live at a convenient price. Large living room, decent-sized kitchen with functional appliances. We had issues with heating, and dealing with the management and maintenance staff was not exactly pleasant and it took months to resolve, but this is not an issue I have heard from others. The bedrooms are quite different size. Quiet area. Coin-op washer and dryer located in the basement. Close to the medical school and hospital, but around a 20 minute walk to downtown. We live on the top floor so we do not have any issues with hearing people above us walking as some on lower floors experience, so if you live here I would recommend taking a top floor apartment. Next year I will be moving closer to campus, but Island Drive was overall a satisfactory place to live my fist year.

Island Drive Apartments

While the complex is dated and the amenities aren't spectacular, the apartments have everything you need and you can really dress them up to make them home-y! You can't beat the price or the location. No dishwasher, which really stinks but we make it work. No dogs allowed, cats are allowed for a monthly fee and yearly deposit. The complex gym is simply an empty apartment with some weights and cardio machines. Convenient for winter if you need to get a quick half hour in. Pool is basic but refreshing during the hot summer days. Maintenance is quick to come by if you call them the morning you want them to come fix something.

Affordable apartments in a great location

Although not the fanciest apartments ever, Island Drive Apartments are the perfect residence for a medical school student and are in an ideal location. By sharing a 2 bedroom unit with a roommate, our rent is about the most affordable you are able to find in the area, especially considering the proximity to the hospital and medical school and the overall convenience. There is plenty of space for the two of us and we've been able to decorate and paint the apartment to make it quite homey and welcoming. Biggest things I wish we had were a dishwasher and in-unit laundry, but it hasn't been a horrible inconvenience to not have them. Parking is included in the rent and is never a problem. Cats are welcome. Our neighbors are quiet and respectful and it's never noisy. Overall just what I needed during my time in medical school.

Island Drive 3BR

Older apartments, but the 3BRs are more recently renovated. Good price for the space (large shared living space, 2 large rooms, one small room). management generally responds quickly. utilities ~120/mo which include full cable, high speed internet, and electric.
parking is only $50 deposit for whole year (and you get it back, so its essentially included).

North Campus is the place to be!! Lots of trails and nature for walking, NCRB gym nearby, grocery stores, gas, food, and more. Mostly graduate students up here so quieter but also within 10 min drive to downtown. There's always parking too.
I have lived in A2 for going on 14 years, it is sort of like having a friend, even when you are alone.

Me and a friend and her dog visit neighborhood parks.

That dog met the caged bald eagle at Leslie Science Center.. and twang!
To the end of his leash! The eagle looked at him like he was the most delicious thing he's seen all Winter. We just trudged thru the snow to view the cages, (both eagle and dog are ok)
Great quieter area very close to the hospital, and close to many other med students. It’s a more peaceful area that’s a tad farther from downtown, but for someone who likes a quieter space to study or nice spaces to walk and hang out with friends, white coat area is right by the river and Island Drive Park, and there are often med student social events held at White Coat Area because so many medical students choose to live here.
I personally really like North Campus, although it is farther away from downtown and the law school. There are several restaurants right near my apartment complex and the commute to school is very easy. I also find the lack of nightlife a plus, because it means the neighborhood is a lot quieter and safer than other areas of Ann Arbor.
Overall this area is great for walking to the medical school and hospital, living near other medical students, and especially having easier parking than in the central downtown/kerrytown areas. You also escape the rowdiness of undergrads by living here. The main reason I gave it a "7/very good" rating was because I don't like feeling isolated in location from central campus. Walking from White Coat to restaurants/bars downtown is at least 20-25 minutes, and often I decide not to go just because I don't want to walk there and back. After 6PM everyday parking is free downtown (free all day on Sunday), which is nice, except you don't always want to drive if you are going out to bars. It would be nice to have some type of casual coffee shop or restaurant in walkable distance to White Coat, but there is not. (edit: there is one breakfast-like cafe near White Coat, but it gets busy and is over-priced). There are some restaurants and coffee shops down the street on Plymouth road (not downtown) which is an easy 5 minute drive.
Multiple apartment/condo complexes within 10 minute walk of one another creating central location for many medical students of the University of Michigan. Park is 5 minute walk away. Lecture halls are 15 minutes door to hall. Hospital is 15-20 minutes from door to specific area of hospital. Never any safety issues. Parking can be strict and limited. Few stores and restaurants nearby.
This neighborhood is a 10 minute walk to the hospital which makes is very popular for medical students, residents, and even attendings. It is quiet, but it can be very busy in the morning and around 4pm when everyone is arriving/leaving their shifts. Grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants are a 5 min drive away near north campus.
Pros: beautiful - near the Huron River (5 min walk!) and trails and lots of trees. Very quiet. Residential area - maybe only 20% students vs. long-term residents where I am, though I'm close to the hospitals and med students, architects, and engineers all live up here. Very safe, and I see deer or even a raccoon once in a while. Grocery store is 1 mile away (Kroeger).

Cons: less social than I like in terms of proximity to Rossers. There is only one on my street that I know of.
