Near-ideal home for internationals

Quaint and satisfactory accommodations. Best perks are fully furnished, best location to campus and downtown Evanston. Interior is newly refurbished too (new wooden floors, walls, appliances) and zero cleanliness issues (haven't seen a single pest), so older reviews on poor interior are outdated. Only minor issues are mildly insufficient heating for deep winter (<20), and shared laundry room with fewer washing units due to breakdowns.

Convenient graduate housing option

This building is primarily for Kellogg and international students but is also open to other graduate students. Pros: most ideal location (easily walkable to campus, train, downtown, lake) and convenience (furniture provided, free laundry, deal exclusively with university personnel, etc); graduate student community; mostly well-maintained and clean. Cons: expensive (can get more for your money further from campus); some dated furniture and appliances; common dorm-style living limitations. There was a major mold problem with the AC unit- the initial management response was quite inadequate, however after further communication with university staff, the unit was replaced and the issue resolved.

First Year Grad Student

I love living in McManus, especially the location with proximity to campus and downtown Evanston. I don't love how much it costs. I think with how old the building is, and the appliances, it is not competitive with other one bedroom apartments in the surrounding areas. I am planning to move solely because of the cost with a graduate student stipend. The laundry machines also never work.

I will happy to continue to live here for all my study life in NU

Apart from the fact that the water doesn't flow very well and the walls are thin so there is some noise, the apartment is impeccable!

Old building; but one of the closest to the hub

Pros:
1. Fully furnished
2. Very close to the hub
3. No hassle for international students
4. Realtively cheaper
5. All utilities included
6. Responsive maintenance
7. Very secure

Cons:
1. Old building - furniture is good but rest can feel vintage
2. No dishwasher; Washer and dryer in a common place in the ground floor
3. Pets not allowed
4. Heating system is centralised. So little control. Can end up feeling slightly cold in the worst days of winter.

Once you are in, you are stuck

Once you take this, very hard to change apartments. So be sure before taking this.

Not worth it

While the convenience of the lease terms and the low cost relative to the area are attractive, the building is outdated and the apartment is basically a former dormitory. The apartment is minimal and there are a number of things wrong with it (e.g., terrible kitchen, lack of consistent heat, lack of consistent water pressure) and the overall process is frustrating, namely the inability to receive packages except when the front desk is occupied, which is very infrequent. The terrible accomodations outweigh the potential benefits.

McManus housing - not worth it

Grad housing is not worth the money you are paying. There are other much better options available for the same price.
I would not recommend it, try out Centrum and OHO as better alternatives

Downtown Evanston Reviews

Downtown Evanston has everything you need. E2 is walkable to campus, a Target, and plenty of restaurants, as well as Metra and L stations to get to Chicago. Right across the street is a Subway, a Thai restaurant, and a pizza place, plus there’s a 7-Eleven about a block away, so you’re very close to options if you need food in a pinch.
Close to downtown Evanston but a bit far from E2/the reserve. One of closest apartments to Trader Joes/Whole Foods/Jewel Osco while also being close to campus. Very close to the lake!
Downtown Evanston has everything you need from a downtown including grocery stores, restaurants, and convenience stores.
Downtown Evanston is great - plenty of great food within walking distance, Metra and El trains right nearby, a really nice place to be. Only downside is it's far from school and the only truly walkable grocery store is a Whole Foods, which can get expensive. Overall, wouldn't want to live elsewhere though.
Close to grocery stores and restaurants. Very easy access to Lake Michigan as well!
There isn't much to do here, but that's true pretty much everywhere in Evanston. We're in walking distance to all of "downtown" Evanston, so restaurants / fast food / subway, etc. It's a slightly longer walk than desired to Kellogg, but that's fine.
The apartment is central to downtown and is walking distance to most bars, restaurants, shops, beach, etc. Evanston is a bit of a sleepy town (especially during the pandemic...I've been told it was much more vibrant pre-pandemic).
I live just south of the main downtown area, and it's the perfect intersection of being close to the action but also a bit removed when you want some quiet. I like being a in a more residential pocket, so there is slightly less foot traffic and really nice areas to walk around with a dog, etc.
