Extremely affordable and great stay!

Poplar West is a very affordable and convenient stay. It is located near Belmont and Heights. It is a 25-minute walk from The Fuqua School of Business.

Pros
1. Extremely affordable rent
2. Clean and spacious townhomes
3. Houses include a dishwasher, fridge, washer, dryer
4. Friendly property management
5. Pet friendly
6. Quiet and peaceful community

Cons
1. Occasional pest (cockroaches) problem, but not uncommon for houses in Durham
2. Thin walls, so sound travels very easily between houses
3. Air conditioning is average, and can cost higher electricity bills
4. No garbage pickup
5. No dedicated apartment security. Not a gated community!

Note: Rent does not include water, electricity, and internet. Please factor in that when evaluating.

Very good value for given price

So far I like it. I am not a very party person and that’s why I love this quiet place.

Positive experience but a bare bones place

Poplar West has been everything I needed. It's spacious, thick walls, great light, and it's walking distance to campus. These apartments are definitely older: cracks in walls, aged wood floors, not so stylish appliances. To be totally honest, I'm pretty sure the price is going to increase like $200 in the next year, and I plan to move. The value was a huge reason I'm living here now and I don't think my apt is worth that increase. Unfortunately it's probably still the cheapest or one of the cheapest in the LaSalle area.

Poplar West

The location is fantastic (<1 mile) bike or walk to TSCHE, the rent is unbeatable, and the community is very friendly and almost entirely gradaute students and young professionals. Highly recommend for pet owners (only $100 one-time fee & $10 per month), awesome dog park in the center of the neighborhood and plenty of fellow dog owners.

The buildings are old and there are cockroaches in all of the apartments. However, management is very good about sending exterminators. After a rough first month, we have had almost no pest issues since.

Close to Duke and affordable neighborhood

I have had a good time in this apartment. It is partially furnished (stove, fridge, washer, and dryer). It is close to West Campus (I spend 15- or 20-minutes walking to the School of Public Policy and less than five minutes biking). It is close (15 to 20 minutes' walk) to a grocery store that offers a wide variety of articles. Highly recommended for someone who wants to save money, walk, and have a quiet life in Durham.

Just fine

Good points:
The location is good - very close to Duke Bus Stop and just 20min walking from Law School
For every problem that I had, I just contacted Trinity Office and they sent someone to fixed - i.g.: spray the apartment, change the lamp, fix the switch, etc.

Weak points:
The apartment wasn't in very good condition when I arrived. I had to clean by myself.
I also had problems with cockroaches. However, it seems quite normal in this area.

Its a good place with a good price for rent

the apartment is a bit old, and some things need to get fixed, but the management has been very responsive to my requests. It is a good price for this much space as long as you don't mind living in a place that is old

Great property

Awesome rent prices and extremely pet friendly (dog park across the street and only $10/month rent increase). The units themselves are old and kind of falling apart, but they are large and management is incredible and respond very quickly to any maintenance issues that may arise.

Good quality for the rent price

Considering the price of the house, it provides great value. There is a big front yard and this specific unit has a lot of windows so plenty of sunlight.
A point of improvement is pest control as it is next to a group of trees and there is lawn all around thus, a lot of insects usually come into the house. Finally, it's location is an advantage as it is close to bus stations and Duke West Campus

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
