Older property, incredibly responsive and caring management, perfect for a graduate student on a budget

Trinity Properties is a no frills experience. The value for the responsive management and the space is fantastic. Although it is older, and things often break, they are quick to respond an fix it. Having direct access to the outdoors has been a blessing during the pandemic. Management even allows us to build our own gardens. Parking is included though it is not covered. 15-20 minute walk to Fuqua and the Nicholas school (avoiding that costly parking pass). This is a super easy place for anyone commuting on West Campus that is cost conscious.

Great Landlords, Walking Distance from West Campus

This is perfect for me and my husband. They are small units but are in a really quite little cul-de-sac with great neighbors. Also a little dog park in the middle of the complex. Very pretty in the spring.

Walking distance from Fuqua, Sanford, and the Law School so you can save on parking costs.

Overall nice, but keep in mind that the buildings are old.

Overall a nice place to stay. I like the fact that it is a stand-alone housing (townhouse) so there is no real neighbor issue (at least not for us). The area itself seems pretty safe (to my standard). Few issues I would complain about. One is that the building is very old with cranky hardwood floor and bad insolation. It makes a lot of noise when we walk up and down the stairs, and when our neighbors are doing the same, we can hear them too (sometimes can even hear them turn on the shower). During winter the heat escapes pretty fast and the heating would have to run constantly to keep the house warm.

Reasonable price with reasonable service

We are in the unit that close to Erwin Terrace and campus, about 15 min walk to Pratt. The rent is reasonable and the house has nothing fancy but all the necessary appliance.

Oldie but a goodie

Poplar West townhomes are older and quieter. The management is extremely responsive when things naturally break down at an older townhome. They are about 15 minutes walking distance to Fuqua and have some cute restaurants nearby. If you are looking to stay away from the craziness of 9th street, while not spending a ton, this is a great option.

Okay place to live

Convenient to Duke University and cute small apartments with relatively helpful maintenance staff. Peaceful bird sounds. Management recently installed washers and dryers in all units. No interior insulation and wood floors = hear everything your neighbor does, says, and every footstep they take. Pet friendly and low pet rent I think mine is $15/month.

Good for students

Good townhouses close to campus and on the Duke bus route. Good for students, although a bit isolated.

One of the cheapest options (and you can tell)

The thermal isolation is very bad, and the ground floor is cold all the time. In the summer roaches appear, although the property owners always try to help and send people to deal with it. Even though electricity bills in winter are higher than in other places, is one of the cheapest options. They are just installing a washing machine and a dryer in mine, before doing the laundry was a bit tedious.

Thoroughly decent; cost-effective

Pros: Proximity to school, nature, laundry building nearby, clotheslines, responsive maintenance, cheaper than other similar rentals.

Cons: Off and on cockroach problem, not near anything else besides school, laundry facilities are not great.

Reasonable place

Its a quiet community, the rent is reasonable and the services are prompt. You often get bugs here though so make sure to keep the place clean. The apartment is a bit old but well maintained. Overall, I would recommend living here if its just under a year.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
