Great Apartment

Winston House is a very nice building and a convenient 5-10 minute walk to campus (slightly closer than the Aston). It's a bit pricey, but so is most of the area. Friendly staff at front desk 24/7 who accept packages, rooftop access, gym, library, lounge, and responsive maintenance.

Winston House is a great place to live!

I live in a one-bedroom apartment in Winston House and I have absolutely loved it thus far. My apartment has wood floors, a walk in closet, in-unit washer and dryer, a balcony, and a brand new kitchen and bathroom (with new appliances and fixtures). It is very spacious and well-designed.

The management at Winston House has always been extremely attentive and accommodating, even before I signed my lease. The building is not owned by a large company, which means that all of the management staff is in the building every business day, allowing them to resolve issues and attend to resident needs quickly. They also worked extensively with me to make sure I got the apartment I wanted.

The building also has very nice amenities - a gym and common room, a rooftop deck, a new lobby, and 24-hour doorman service. All of the doormen are very friendly and are always available to help me with packages or let me in to my apartment when I get locked out. They make me feel very safe, which was especially important to me given that I live alone. The building is also very clean and well kept; there is regular maintenance and improvement, and the building will be installing new elevators this year.

The location is excellent for GW students who wish to live close to campus. There are also a number of gyms, restaurants, and bars close by. However, many of the restaurants and coffee shops are closed on the weekends because the area is largely commercial. There is also a moderate amount of noise and sirens from the fire station next door and from the hospital a few blocks away.

While the building is not very social (I have not met many other residents), it is mostly lived in by students. This means it is typically quiet on weekdays and "school nights," but more noise is tolerated on the weekends and on "going out nights."

Safe, Clean, Terrific Management

L Street is soooo loud in the mornings. So if you live in the front of the building, purchase earplugs and/or a noise cancelling machine. Also, bear in mind that a LOT of pesky college kids live here. That said, management does a great job of helping control these obnoxious idiots.

Great Mangement, Loud Kids

The building is great - the doormen are responsible and friendly, and the location is hard to beat if you live/work in Foggy Bottom. BUT, the building has recently become home to very loud college kids with little regard for anyone else who lives in the building. The management sends out threatening emails, but at the end of the day it's of little use as the kids continue to throw parties and be noisy in the hallways. The door provides little sound buffer.

Great bang for your buck

Winston House is really great about allowing tenants to put up walls in their apartments — they will even recommend a contractor and have it ready before move-in so you don't have to sneak around. I live with a roommate in a converted 1BR, and the rent is unbeatable for DC (even including the one-time amenities fee). The building manager is also incredibly kind and responsive. Winston House is a 10-minute walk from the law school and Dupont, and it's super metro-accessible.

Fantastic Place, Great Amenities, A+

I love living in Winston House for many reasons. Primarily, the staff and management company are both outstanding. Every employee is kind, the management company is understanding and very diligent. Any issue which we have had has been readily and quickly handled. Additionally, I think that the value we get from this place is top-tier. The location is amazing and the library/study-space and small gym being included in this building really add to the incredible value. Ultimately, I love the various room set-ups that Winston House offers. The two bedroom spaces are quite large and nearly every room has a balcony. The roof space is HUGE and very clean and nice. Further, each room is in good shape and clean and wonderful places to live in. I can't wait until I re-sign here for another year.

Great for GW students

Probably half the building is GW undergrads, the rest are mostly grad students or people who work at the hospital. The roof is very big but the rest of the amenities are pretty mediocre. Location is incredible though. Just don't be surprised if you hear parties on the weekend.

Go-To GW Housing Alternative

Winston House is clearly the go-to getaway from GW housing, for better and for worse.

The building itself is a well maintained, slightly older apartment building with clean, newer fixtures and nice open layouts. With washer dryers in unit, combined with full larger kitchens, it is the perfect place to live with friends and be a great social hub for students and young professionals alike. Note: it is on the little pricier side with utilities not included, but the overall staff, atmosphere and location make up for it.

Additionally, the location is just incredible. Convenience stores, grocery stores, like TJs and Safeway, and restaurants/bars of Georgetown and West End are blocks away (less than that in the case of Stoney's!).

However, the social aspect can sometimes hinder the experience if you're expecting something a bit more professional. There will be the occasion frat group making noise and natty light can left in the elevator. That being said, the atmosphere of younger people projects fun balanced with a great management staff and connections. The roof is great for entertaining dinner parties or summer get togethers.

All in all, Winston House is a great place to live, entertain and really take advantage of all DC has to offer.

Great place for students...

This building is a haven for George Washington Students. It is in a safe neighborhood, close enough to campus to be convenient, and far enough to feel outside of the GW bubble. The building's staff is very polite, and the building manager, Michael, is a funny guy. The apartments in the building are pretty spacious for being in Foggy Bottom/ Although rent can be a little steep, it is not outrageous for the area.

However, if you are looking for a quiet place to live you may want to look elsewhere. In recent years GW students have made the building an unofficial dorm. Weeknights are calm, but weekends can get rowdy. If you are a young professional this may not bother you, but if you have a young child this may not be ideal.

The rooftop is really awesome, and there's a nice entertainment suite that you can rent out. The gym covers the basics as well.

Amazing Property - Lived here for 2 Years

I lived here for 2 years during graduate school. The manager, Michael, is AMAZING. He will help you with anything you need and the desk staff are amazing. All my friend were jealous of how good I had it while at this apartment. I miss it a lot and would definitely move back. The only downside is that there are a lot of young people (GW students) living here. I only ever had one problem the whole 2 years and it was the person next to me playing loud music during the day while I was writing papers. The desk staff definitely helped out though and care about your comfort. It also comes with the territory of living in an apartment and staying at home during the day! Also, the roof is amazing for showing friends the city and you can rent it out for parties.

Love this area, right near Logan Circle and 14th street which has so much good food and nightlife!
Amazing neighborhood. Close to GW and close to so much good food and nice restaurants.
Sometimes noisy, but the front desk quickly deal with it if you ask
Great, Safe neighborhood with great food and close to campus.
Foggy Bottom/West End are great for 1Ls -- you will get to know the area around school and you will be conveniently within a few blocks of GW. There are a lot of food options, but night life is lacking (though you're a short walk to DuPont and Georgetown). There are plenty of busses and metros around.
Good only in the sense that it is near the school, that you can receive warnings from the school and D.C. (if signing up), that you can be assured of safety generally even if coming in late due to pulling off night studies in the library. However, noise levels are high, so you can hardly study indoors at home because of people wanting to earn money in exchange for their loud and terrible performances. This means that you may ultimately end up outside for work or rest during morning/afternoon. Noise in the evening can be high too due to some people having gone drunk. Noise (some loud trucks and mostly machine sounds) and lights can be too much for sleeping deeply.
It's really only convenient because of how close the law school is. Otherwise, I would not live here. Definitely a business/corporate area that shuts down on the weekends. Not a lot of options for going out to eat unless it's either overpriced or fast food. The only grocery store that's walking distance is Whole Foods, which I personally hate shopping at.
The Aston is the furthest GW housing from the campus, so we had to walk more than any other student to get to class. We are also the furthest away from any Metro station, but still not considerably far when you look at the big picture. There are grocery stores, bars, and restaurants nearby which is a perk, but it is pretty noisy around here. But I guess that's anywhere in Downtown DC. There are always cars honking, ambulance sirens, etc. But the area seems pretty safe.
