Apartment in old house

The property is old, so while it has some nice looking details, it’s also not in the best condition. The management was pretty responsive to maintenance requests, though non-essential/less urgent issues didn’t get addressed. I like the location: between Collegetown and the Commons but a bit quieter than either and on multiple bus routes. One plus about 116 Ferris #1 is that it’s the only apartment in the building with interior access to the shared laundry room.

Unsympathetic Landlord

When we moved into the apartment, it was absolutely filthy. There was dirt, dust, and spider webs. I even cut my foot on a piece of broken glass. Upon first looking at the place, before signing the lease, the landlord not only said that he would clean it, but that he would fix the myriad aspects of the house that were falling apart. He fixed nothing.

I think the perfect way to sum up how little this landlord cares about his tenants is to describe the laundry debacle. Our washing machine (which we share with the entire house) was broken for about 2 months. We told the landlord that it was broken and needed to be replaced. He insisted that it was us who kept overloading it, even though mere half-loads made the machine fail. Eventually, after much bitching, he did replace the broken machine... with an OLDER and SMALLER one. And to add insult to injury, he INCREASED the price by 50 cents per load.

The apartment would be okay, given the low price and location, if the landlord cared even a little about his tenants after we signed the lease. This landlord is a selfish crook.

Oh, and someone broke into our apartment via the over-worn back door lock. When we called the landlord to tell him what had happened, his first question was not whether we were okay, it was about his own liability. By the way, the culprit of the break-in lives across the street.
