Shay review

Great location and the maintenance team is quick to respond to any issues in your apartment. Our bedrooms do lack natural light so that is a big downside, but the living room is very spacious.

Paying for convenience and location

I have lived at the Shay for all four years of medical school. While I did get a student discount when I first moved in, it is expensive to live in DC. However I have never had to drive to school or the hospital, and the walk is less than seven minutes door to door. It is right in the mix with the restaurants, bars, hang out spots on U Street, and it is a really nice little street with a Korean barbecue restaurant, coffee shop perfect for studying, mini market, and clothing shops on the first level below the apartments. The apartment building itself is nice and modern, and the common area is also a good place to study or hang out with friends. The staff is nice and accommodating for any of your needs. It has been easy to for fill maintenance request, and pick up packages and I have had no major issues living here. The units are bright and some have amazing views of the city and Washington monument. All units have in-unit washer and dryer, which was a huge perk for me.

The downsides of the Shay are the cost & the proximity to U street, which can get loud on weekends and on nights when people are out. The gym is also rather small, and the community shared space doesn’t have a lot of outlets.

Chic Modern Apt 5 minute walk from campus

I’ve been living in the Shay since first year, and while the rent is on the higher end (as it is for most people who live in the city), it works out because I can walk to school/hospital in 5 minutes and it is conveniently located to U street and 2 metro stops. On the street level, there’s several retail stores, a market and restaurant, and a coffee shop that’s great for studying. The Shay is definitely worth at least a visit just to check it out. The leasing office often has deals that can help cut down the rent costs, especially for students. The Shay is a new modem apartment complex with a great young professional vibe, a 24 hr security and front desk staff, a large common lounge and pool area, rooftop deck, and a gym. I’ve enjoyed being so close to school, the metro stops, U street restaurants/bars, and to my favorite gym and grocery store.

Great building with a few annoying details

The Shay is a great new building in a perfect location. The units are decent size and all have very large windows that bring a lot of light into the apartments. There is very nice roof deck on each building, and the West building has a small (but usable) gym, as well as an outdoor pool and deck and an indoor community room. The annoying details include the fact that the door buzzer cannot be used to allow guests to come the entire way up to the apartment, as the key fob is needed for the elevator. Additionally, while the appliances are all new and from well-known brands, we have had significant problems with more than one of them since we moved in.

Beautiful but pricey

Exceptional amenities and common spaces. Great gym and unbelievable view from the rooftop of d.c. skyline. Walking distance to U street bars and restaurants. Also close to shaw metro stop. Pricey but worth it. Can't say enough about how much we enjoy living here!

U Street Corridor Reviews

Very vibrant part of town, with a lot of young professionals. There is a lot to do in the neighborhood from restaurants, bars, and even workout studios/gyms. There is so much within walking distance, and there are two metro stops also within walking distance. It is very convenient especially if you are a Howard student. You really couldn’t be in a better neighborhood than U Street corridor and the Shaw District.
Love the restaurants on 14th and the availability of bars in my neighborhood, however the U st bars have creepier people than the bars in other parts of the city. Also my phone was stolen at Tropicalia. Don't go there.
There are not many grocery stores nearby, but there is a great Chinese Restaurant down the street. The neighborhood is probably one of the safest places in DC.
Great parks, restaurants, and bars nearby. Also close to several supermarkets, coffee, shops and a metro station
Shaw // U St is a great place to live. Tons of fun bars and restaurants nearby as well as great shopping.
There are a bunch of restaurants and bars in the area, so that is a major plus. The area is also right next to Meridian Hill Park, so you have easy access to a lot of outdoor space. Depending on the exact location of the building, there can be a lot of noise, but the area is overall safe.
Although, noisy, the U street corridor is by far the only place I'd want to live in DC. Yes, the area is in serious need of some parking garages but between the convenience and amazing nightlife this area has it all.
Love Shaw, feels like a neighborhood but with plenty of fun things to do & very close to everything you would need. Access to public transit while not too far from VA or GW.
